CarComplaints.com Notes: The second generation Durango was introduced in 2004 and instantly came under fire for, well, catching on fire.

From 2004-2006 electrical overloading in the driver's side instrument panel caused numerous reports of interior fires. The interior infernos became so commonplace that Chrysler eventually issued a recall.

The problems didn't stop there, however. Owners of the recalled vehicles complained about being treated unfairly and given take-it-or-leave-it low ball settlement offers. "They offered me $2000 under NADA retail as a settlement," said one owner, "and have been rude and hostile to deal with." Nothing says awesome service like treating your customers rudely after their cars have already caught on fire.

Dodge Durango Owners Beware! I don't know about other years, but on my 2005 Durango there is a recall for the Gear shifter on automatics, being able to shift without the key in the ignition, the only problem was my vin was not included in this recall, but the problem still exists. I would have never found out about this situation if my three year old son would not have climbed up in the driver seat while it was parked in the drive way, and WITHOUT a key shifted down to neutral. The vehicle then gained speed as it rolled down a hill and smashed into a tree. The problem is not that serious but the result of the problem could mean death for anyone standing around when this vehicle starts rolling unexpectedly. The messed up thing about the whole situation is chrysler did an investigation, and even though the problem is do to an improperly installed shifter pawl from the factory they still would not cover the damage. I own three different dodge vehicles and all of my family drives, and buys dodge, but now since Chrysler will not stand behind there products they just lost many customers, because know one I know including me, will ever buy chrysler products again. I currently have all my vehicles on the market for sale and as soon as the Durango gets out of the shop after a hefty $8000 bill I will sell it as well even though it will now not be worth as much, I guess I will just turn around and take that loss as well. Thanks for nothing Chrysler. So the moral of this story is if you own a dodge Durango go out to your vehicle and make sure you can not shift it without the key in the ignition, if you can, you might want to check if your vin is included in the recall, if not expect to pay about $300 to $400 to get it fixed. Also because I cannot afford to take Chrysler to court nor have the time to appear in hundreds of court dates to try and recoup some of my money, I would tell everyone that reads this to think twice about purchasing from a Company that cannot stand behind what they produce.
