I have owned my 2001 Dodge Durango SLT Plus for 5.5 years now... and with extremely few problems. It have very low miles - 47000 as I use the vehicle for commuting to and from work. Just recently on Aug. 18 my "Service 4WD" light came on. Funny thing though - my 2001 Dodge Durango is a 4x2. I did some checking and there is a Technical Service Bulletin regarding this problem that I found on this website: TSB# 0832000. The car dealer says that the bulletin states that replacing the A/C Ctrl Assembly, priced at $265, fixes the problem of the Service 4WD light staying on. He said that once the A/C Ctrl Assembly is replaced the Service 4WD light never comes back on. The dealer also stated they did not know nor did the TSB state why replacing the A/C Ctrl Assembly would fix the problem. He did speculate that the light being on had something to do with an electrical feedback signal between the instrument cluster and the A/C Ctrl Assembly. Other than that there are NO mechanical malfunctions in the vehicle. The A/C, heat and defroster at the various fan positions, all work properly. Not wanting to spend $265 for a silly light staying on I've got 2 options: Ignore the lamp (my wife suggested putting a piece of paper over the location of the light... LOL!) or pull out the dash cluster and throw away the light bulb. After all, it doesn't make sense to have the indicator there anyway since the vehicle is not a 4 wheel drive vehicle. :-)
