My 99 Dodge Durango 4X4 has had vibrations and noise in the front from when I purchased. The Dodge dealer earlier told me there were no recalls or hidden warranties on this product, VIN# [xxx]. my Goodyear dealer, inspected my Dodge and showed me that my upper and lower ball joints were bad (( moving over 1/2 in)) he said take it to your dealer, because this is not right. Dodge dealer also said that both right and left, upper and lower ball joints were bad and also that the hubs and wheel bearings. Were bad, and needed to be replaced for my safety. I called diamler Chrysler Corp. And asked if they would cover this mfg problem. I was given clam #13756706. The customer service person said they would not cover this problem because my VIN # not covered by the upper & lower ball joint recall. I could not believe this would not be covered, because when I looked up my 99 Durango on your site on complaints, I saw over 500 similar cases for 99 Durango, with ball joint and steering problems. Dodge said 99 not part of recall. I think the U.S gov. Needs to tell Dodge to include in recall all the Dodge Durango with this problem, please look out for the safety of the amer. People and not alow Chrysler Corp get away with this safety problem. I feel the amer people should not need to get the courts involved when we have an Agency that should protect the amer. People from defective products. I hope this ball joint problem etc. Does not became another "Ford - Firestone" situation. Dodge said they need to hear from you before they can do a recall on 1999 Dodge Durango's, (( with over 500 complaints of similar problems, how many more do you need!!)) I live in the Washington, D.C. area and when I drive I-495 beltway I hope you are not their when my front wheels fall off because of bad ball joints. Please do your duty and recall all Dodge Durango 1998 and up for upper & lower ball joints, steering etc. Please do your job and protect me and my family. Took in for routine maintance.found out that upper ball joints were ready to braek at 51,000 miles. This is on my 1999 Dodge Durango that hasd been well taken care of. Caught the problem before failure occured which would have caused steering failure. Ball joints and lower control arms needed replaced. Yes the old parts are available.
My wife and I purchased a used 1999 Dodge Durango slt 5.9L in October of 2003. The Durango had approximately 55,000 miles. For the past few months we have noticed an odd ticking or clicking sound while turning corners. On 6/25/2005 (with approximately 77,000 miles) we replaced the front tires as they were very unevenly worn. While checking the wheels we noticed that both the upper and lower ball joints had failed on each side of the car. They did not snap but there was far too much play in the ball joints. The upper joints have since been replaced, we kept the old parts as proof if needed. We will keep the old lower ball joints when we are able to replace them. No accidents resulted of this failure, although this being our main vehicle and driven almost everyday it was a shock to find such a failure on parts that are gauranteed for far longer than 80,000 miles.
Contact states: Premature wear of upper ball joints and front suspension. Dealer T said car was not under recall. Also, called daimler Chrysler and they told him the same thing.

Contact had to have all four ball joints replaced on 1999, Dodge, Durango. This vehicle did not fall under the recall campaign. The mechanic that replaced the ball joints stated the replacement was due to poor design of the vehicle.
Consumer noticed that vehicle started riding rough. Consumer replaced shocks, but the front end still seemed to ride rough enough to feel all bumps in road. Consumer had brake pads changed and the mechanic showed consumer that ball joints were bad. Mechanic checked both top and bottom ball joint on driver's side. Ball joints showed lots of wear. Then, mechanic checked passenger side to find that more slack was in passenger side than driver side. Mechanic told consumer that there were stories of wheels coming off of same type of vehicle. In 2003 I had ball joints, upper and lower replaced, also tires were replaced. The arms were replaced prior to that. Dealer is now recommending the ball joints and tires be replaced again at cost $1200 for ball joints plus the cost of tires. The dealer had no idea why this would happen. I consumer called manufacturer, and they could not help. The only recall was for the years of 2000-2003, consumer's vehicle recall was 1999.
I noticed while driving my 1999 Dodge durrango, at speeds in excess of 45 mph, that the front end shook excessively. I took my 99 durrango to the local Dodge dealer, and asked about a recall that I was told about. The service manager at the dealership told me it was for 2000's not 99's. then he proceded to tell me that the 2000 and the 99 upper control arm and ball joint assembly were exactly the same part. But, he could not explain to me why one was covered under the recall and the other was not. He then quoted me a price and wanted me to leave my vehicle so it could be repaired. When I insisted on an explaination for this, he swiftly gave me a 1-800 number to call, where ofcourse I got the run around and still no answer.
1999 Dodge Durango. Ball joints and tie rod needed to be replaced because they were completely broken. I saw the recall notice on the 2003 Durango and believe that my 1999 Durango experienced the same failure.
I bought my 1999 Dodge Durango back in May 2003. I had it for almost one year and brought it in for some maintenance. They told me 3 of the 4 ball joints were bad and the fourth one was still within spec, whatever that is. I was also told that one ball joint was about to come apart if I had waited any longer. I had them replaced at a cost of $716. I then continuewd to keep up on the maintenance of them by greasing them regularly and inspecting them once a month. Last month I noticed that the fourth on ethat was not replaced is woren and needs to be replaced. I also see that a recall was done but does not cover all the vehicles that have this problem. I believe that Dodge needs to step up and fix this problem for all the Durangos not just a few.
EA03023 ball joints on the 1999 Dodge Durango. Consumer wants to know why there are no recall on the 1999 Dodge Durango when they have the same problems as the newer models.
Consumer stated: When driving down the road the steering wheel would shake badly, and there was a clanking noise every once in awhile. Dealership replaced all 4 ball joints on the front end suspension.
Consumer states: The upper and lower ball joints on the front end on both sides are completely gone. Vehicle shakes and rattles uncontrollably. Bought used a year and half ago, also, the U joints were replaced 2 weeks after purchase. Have to have both hands on the wheel to control. Talked to Chrysler, and they recognized there was a problem, and will pay for upper ball joints, consumer will hav eto pay for lower joints and labor.
1999 Dodge Durango, same problem as the 2000 up. The recall was done on those but Dodge has not been forced to recall the 1999's. we purchased our vehicle in August 1999, it never did drive good, wandering, we thought it might be the tires, and continued to drive until unable to go anywhere in safety. Took the vehicle to larry miller 12/22/2003 they recommended replacing both inner tie rods, idler arms, alignment etc. Cost of $796 this was approx 55,000 miles. Since they would not warrant the car, we took it to a private shop russ' alignment in salt lake. And paid $779 2/4/2004. We replaced all 4 tires. We had this vehicle into alignment shops constantly, tire repair, balancing etc the tires were so badly worn in directions that should never have been on a vehicle. These things should have been done 30,000 miles sooner. I contacted Chrysler and submitted the receipts the file # 13542683, phone # 1-800-992-1997 option #5. I spoke with "brandy" brandy instructed the Durango was out of warranty and they had no requirement to compensation. When asked to put that in a written statement they refused and said it was in my file and they did not have to submit that information nor could I speak with a superviser. But that I would receive my original bills back in 7-10 days. This is a recent claim and have not received my original receipts yet. 5/18/2005
Brought 99 durang. In for front end alig. Was told $ 1600 in repairs needed, guess what? yup, upperand lower ball joints, inner control rods and shocks, well the shocks seem fine but the rest is a mess, called dealer ira Dodge, and they said only recall was for a 2000 and up.I asked if it was nomal for all four ball joints to go at 64K(it could have been earlier I need new tires at the time inner wheel was wearing) he said no.. oh well right, this is ridiculous.checked part nums at local parts place(autozone) for all said above, $259.that included new shocks, better ones too.ill never buy a Dodge again.and ill never go to Firestone tires
Dt consumer states when the wheel was turned to the right, the vehicle would jerk and pull to the right. The vehicle has been serviced. The upper ball joint were replaced to correct this problem.
