Failure of upper and lower ball joints on my 1999 Durango. I was told if I didn't replace the uppers my tires could fall off and if I didn't replace the lowers I could loose my ability to steer.
While driving 45 mph consumer heard a loud knocking noise coming from the front. Suddenly, vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that both frontal upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced.
Too much play in the steering wheel while driving 30 mph or more. Vehicle was taken to a repair shop, and mechanic determined that both upper / lower ball joints needed to be replaced. The dealer was not notified.
Took vehicle in for rountine rotation and alignment of tires. Wasn't allowed to leave with vehicle until the upper ball joints were replaced because they were in such bad shape. The vehicle had bearly 40,000 miles on it. Have now had all front ball joints, upper and lower replaced because of the bad wearing of them.
Had taken vehicle for inspection in December 2002, and was informed upper ball joints needed replacing due to being worn out. At the next inspection, December 2003, the upper ball joints had the same problem again. In June 2004 the upper ball joints were replaced; in December 2004 the upper & lower ball joints had to be replaced after not passing inspection. There was no popping noise heard before each replacement of ball joints.

Complaint received via E-mail. I took my truck to the dealership to have wheels aligned because I had been hearing some snapping and popping while turning corners at low speeds. After inspecting my truck the service manager informed me that the truck needed new upper ball joints.......prostrollo's Inc repaired/replaced the lower ball joints. Consumer reported lower ball joint failure to NHTSA after hearing Durangos were being recalled due to the problem of upper ball failure. Feels 1999 Durangos should be included in the recall.
Complaint received via E-mail." My Durango is a 1999 and had to have its upper and lower ball joints replaced this last year. Dealership that I purchased it from, which also does all of my maintenance, monitored their demise. At first mention, I was unable to afford the repair, and asked them to hold off. After about 6 months, I was told that they were so bad that it was unsafe to put my vehicle on the road in the condition they were in. Therefore, I had the repair done. I am very disappointed that my vehicle is not being considered in the recall.
1999 Dodge Durango,4X4, 68,000 miles. Front end compnonents (upper and lower ball joints) are worn causing knocking noise and unsafe driving condition.
I own a 1999 Dodge Durango which had to have the upper and lower ball joints as well as the control arms replaced at a cost of $1200. As an owner of a Durango, I do not feel the recall should be limited to model years 2000 to 2003. It is evident that the faulty parts used by Dodge were used in model years prior to 2000.
I heard of the Durango/Dakota recall on 12-10-2004. I own a 1998 Durango and I have replaced ball joints 3 times. I submitted a complaint to the NHTSA several years ago (ODI number is: 10030636) and have not had any responses. I do not understand why the 1998, 1999 models were not included in the recall, especially since the initial complaints of bad ball joints involved these model years. Do I have any recourse at this point? I still have receipts for all work done. Thank you.
Front end of my 1999 Durango, which only has 71,862 miles, is making a clunking noise when turning corners or going through dips in the road. I checked the frontend if the vehicle while on a jack and found that the left front wheel assembly - possibly the ball joints - moved damatically compared the the right side. I feel that there is a potential problem that the front end assembly my break off if the right set of circumstances occur. I read today that duragno's from 2000-2004 are being recalled for the same type of problem with the front end. O you think that my vehicle should be covered for repair under a factory defect also? this vehicle does not have.
A couple of weeks ago consumer noticed steering failure. Steering wheel became very loose. He then took the vehicle to dealer to get it serviced, and mechanic determined that the failure in steering was due to ball joints.
While driving at low speeds consumer heard a loud knocking noise coming from the front and vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic replaced both frontal upper and lower ball joints. However, the problem recurred, and mechanic determined that the upper ball joints needed to be replaced again.
I have a 1999 Dodge Durango.on May 11, 2004 I had to replace upper and lower ball joints. The mechanic said I was in danger of having an accident if I didn't replace them. I believe they were defective and the 1999 models should be included in the recall.
Consumer took vehicle to dealer for a front end alignment. Consumer was told that the front end alignment could not be performed because the ball joints were bad. Later, consumer took the vehicle to a Chrysler dealership, and was told that the ball joints were within specifications, and would not replace them. Consumer contacted a few other after market alignment shops, and was told that the ball joints were bad and an alignment could not be performed.
In the begining of November I took my 1999 Dodge Durango into the shop to have a noise checked out. The mechanic discovered that my ball joints were almost completly worn out. They instructed me to not drive it on the highway if I could not afford to get it fixed that day. I drive 30 miles to work on the highway everyday so I had no choice but to have them fixed. I now see that the ntsa has suggested a recall of the 2000-2003 Durangos, why isn't the 1999 Durango included?
I own a 1999 Dodge Durango. At 53,000 miles both upper and lower ball joints had to be replaced due to faulty manufactured ball joints. My mechanice informed me that this is was a dangerous situation which could have endangered everyone in my vehicle. Luckily the problem was caught before bodily harm was caused. It was a very costly repair which I was told when I bought the vehicle and the extended warranty should have been covered. However the dealership that sold the vehicle knowing about the inherent problem excluded the coverage for ball joints.
