My tires started to wear in an unusual pattern. After hearing about the 2000-2003 recall of the Dodge Durango I had my 1999 checked and found out that all four of my ball joints are bad. The same thing that they are recalling the 2000-2003 Durangos for. It will cost approx. $650 to fix. I think they need to extend the recall to 1999. Has anyone else had any failure with the Durangos other then the recall years" how do they determine that only the 2000-2003 Durangos are the only ones affected by the ball joint failure" apperently the 1999 have the failure too. Please let me know if anyone else has had trouble with their 1999 Durango. Thanks.
On my 1999 Dodge Durango the upper and lower ball joints failed at 61,600 miles. I noticed unusual wear patterns on my tires. I had my vehicle checked out at a local garage. We purchased a brand new 1999 Dodge Durango in October 1998. In November 2001 while the vehicle was being serviced the technician informed me that the ball joints were bad and would have to be replaced. The vehicle was just out of warranty so I had an out of pocket expense of $964. The technician said that not to replace the ball joints at that time would make the vehicle unsafe, therefore I had little choice but to spend the money. Shortly after that news of Durangos having defective ball joints began surface. These reported incidents lead to a recall involving Durangos beginning in 2000. We believe that the recall should involve all Dodge Durangos. The fact that the models previous to 2000 were using the same defective ball joints is apparent by what happened to us. The fact that we had no serious incidents is due to an alert service technician and the grace of god. There is no reason Dodge should not replace the ball joints in previous models of Durangos or refund the expenses of those who sought to protect their families by replacing the faulty parts. We have proof of expenses. We contacted Dodge and they stated that because our vehicle wasn't covered by the official recall that they had no obligation to rectify our losses.
After 14 months, I have had to replace the upper and lower ball joints again in my 1999 Dodge Durango 4 X 4. it has 79,000 miles on it. Dodge only warranties parts for 12 months. I started hearing a loud squeaking noise coming from my front end. I took the vehicle to the dealer, thinking it was some problem with the shocks. It turns out that both sets of ball joints should be replaced. I have the worn out ball joints.
While driving 30 mph vehicle jerked and vibrated uncontrollably. Driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that both frontal and rear upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced.
I have a 1999 Dodge Durango, and I am having problems with my front end suspension, the same thing that the 2000-2003 models were recalled for, shouldn't this be covered also? it only has 64,000 miles on it and we have replaced the right front upper and lower ball joints and tie rod end. Now the left ball joints needs to be replaced also.

The right front and left windows were inoperative, there was noises coming from the serpentine belt, the vehicle had taken too long to crank after sitting for a while and the intake manifold leaked oil.
I own a 1999 Dodge Durango slt with just over 40,000 miles. It has recently been diagnosed as needing both upper and lower front end ball joints. Because it is not a 2000 or later model, regardless of the low milage. I was informed that daimler Chrysler would do nothing about the problem.
