Durango shut off without warning, while driving, multiple times. Once shut off on freeway in heavy traffic. Power steering did not work. Could not turn away from other vehicles. Only thing that worked was the brakes. Shut off at least 4 or 5 other times in parking lots, usually after initial start. Sometimes started right back up, sometimes took up to 30 minutes to start again. Battery had good charge. No delay to start, just shuts off without warning. We do not drive it on the freeway anymore for fear it will shut off and cause an accident. Timing for the failure is unpredictable. Husband tried to replay the circumstances and make it shut off, didn't shut off. Blinkers work intermittently. Have not tried repairing it yet. Did some research online, seems many people have this same problem with the same vehicle and none of the usual remedies work. I am planning to take it to the dealership, but am hesitant to waste money on something they don't know how to fix. Diagnostic tests for others have been negative. This problem has occurred several times and began about 6 months ago. Freeway incident was around may this year.
99 Dodge Durango slt 5.9L engine. After purchasing this car in Feb. 2008, while I was driving it just shut down. No warning was given. This started happening several times a day while I drove it. I had to have it towed in by the man who I was buying it from to go to the mechanics. They tried numerous times to find the issue. Finally after dealing with not having the car on & off for three months, I found out that others got the same error code I did in the odometer window which said, "no bus." It was then towed again, and I wrote the mechanic a note telling them that I found out that others had the same issue. Thousands & thousands. Their car shut down at any moment. The last time my car shut down on me was while I was on the interstate going 65 mph. It just shut down completely, no warning. We were almost in a near fatal accident. Thankfully the car swerved and some people stopped and helped me push it off to the median. Once at the mechanics, I received a call stating it was in fact the PCM, it was replaced and then the car did not do this any longer. That is a expensive part to replace. Now again one year later this same car is at the mechanics again for the PCM being replaced. I just handed them $450 ( total $800) to get it. He had my car for 6 weeks before determining that the PCM had failed once again on this car. Dodge needs to take responsibility for this. I do not understand why they would dismiss such a road hazard. While a great car in looks, it is not safe on the road. We need something done about this. I have children who ride in this car and can't afford to buy a new car at any moment. They need to recall the 1999 Dodge Durangos and reimburse those of us who have had to replace this PCM causing the car to shut down. There are too many people out there with the exact same problem for this to be continued to be ignored by Dodge. Sabrina fowler
I have a 1999 Dodge Durango which has stalled while driving numerous times. The first time I was in stop and go traffic and it died. 3 minutes later it started back up and ran fine. Then, a month later while traveling 65mph on the freeway it died again. Luckily I was in the right lane and was able to coast to the shoulder lane. After 10 minutes it started up again and ran fine. A week later I was driving it and it suddenly died again. This time it took over 2 hours to get it started again. It died again 10 minutes later. Another 15 minutes to get it started again and it died pulling in to my driveway. I am afraid to drive this vehicle, and don't know what to do to fix it. I was told by a mechanic it might be the fuel filter, and when I looked for the part online, I came across a website with hundreds of consumer complaints for the same problem. People are afraid to drive this vehicle since it is a safety issue that it will just die unexpectedly irregardless of where you are driving it or how fast or slow it's going. Diagnostic tests reveal no error codes, people are being told to try changing out several different parts on the vehicle, at great cost, with no consistent success at solving this problem. I cannot afford to spend money guessing what the problem may be, and it seems Dodge is well aware of this problem with 1998-99 Dodge Durangos across the country. All seem to think it is a manufacturer defect in design of this vehicle, as the PCM is located in a very high heat location under the hood which seems to fry the PCM as well as numerous other parts it is running in conjunction with. www.automotiveforums.com/T91464.html I have a '99 Durango with ~45000 miles. Recently it has been breaking down on me. I feel it lose power until it dies all together. After about 20 minutes it will start again. This has happened 5 times. When it happened today, I was going about 30 mph, when I felt it lose power. The speedometer went to '0" - the 'check engine light came on', the 'fuel pump' light came on (like it does when you run out of gas), then I had this odd message on the odometer that said "no bus". this time I had it towed to pep boys w/O trying to crank it with the hopes they can get a code. I told them about the "no bus" message but they did not seem to know anything about it. I have found this mentioned on a few bulletins boards but not with much info. I think perhaps a service bulletin from Dodge said something about this. Does anyone have any ideas as to what "no bus' means and perhaps if this is the cause of me breaking down. What can I do to get it fixed ? please help..thanks!
Component: Electrical system details: I own a 1999 Dodge Durango it has 130000 miles on for the past 2 months it just shuts off no power to gauges and engine dies just like I turned the engine off doesn't matter where you are just have to wait about 30 min and will start back up this is very dangerous to my family after searching the web for this problem I noticed several other people have the same problem this happens daily several mechanics have looked for the problem but it has not been found Dodge needs to step up to the plate and repair there defective vehicles. Last year I had to replaced the master brain was told this was the problem. Now one year later after the warranty is out it is doing it again, no one can find out why it is cutting out again, been in shop several time with told nothing is wrong. I have had this 1999 Dodge Durango since 1999 and always taken care of it as far as maintenance goes. Someone please tell me what is causing the problem. I do not want another SUV to roll over because of cutting out and not being able to control the SUV. I bought a Dodge because this happen once to my Ford and I almost lost my family (3 children and husband) that time. I did lose the full use of my left hand. This problem need to be taken care of please help I see I am not the only one.

I purchased the 1999 Dodge Durango 2/8/09. The truck ran good for one week. Then it would just stall with no warning and a "no bus error" would flash on the odometer. After about 20 minutes the truck would start back up. But that is unacceptable. It has been stalling every week since May 12, 2009. It quit 8/11/09 and it was stuck in traffic with no where to go. It took one hour and 15 minutes for the truck to start back up. Dodge needs to be held accountable for this issue. If you just take 3 minutes and google "no bus signal on odometer of 1999 Dodge Durango" you'll spend the next 3 days reading all the complaints with no solution to fixing the problem. I am a single parent and I depend on this vehicle to get back and forth to work and the doctors. I have had the diagnostics run on the truck and it doesn't even read. They don't know about it unless they're in the truck with you when it happens or there within 15 mins of the truck stopping. All this money for cash for clunkers and couldn't even drive it to a car lot if I wanted to. It wouldn't start. I am very upset and angry and feel that Dodge has dodged another bullet. Never will I buy a car from Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep again, because they are not being responsible. Believe me, they are aware of the issue. Just don't give a *^$!
1999 Dodge Durango faulty electrical/computer operations. Vehicle intermittently stalls while driving. Vehicle has stalled when starting from a stop (0-5mph), at cruising speeds (55mph) or randomly while driving in the city (25-3mph). Replaced PCM and issue subsided for 2 years only to begin again. Dealership stated the recurrence was due to faulty ABS control unit, replaced in Aug '09, only to have same issue occur again 2 days after retrieving the vehicle. Previously car would restart after engine had time to cool down. Since PCM was replaced, issue has become twofold - intermittent stalling and intermittent not starting. Drove the car to school, returned home, car sat for 1 hr, go to leave, car wont start. Engine cranks, plenty of battery (all electrical works) but engine wont turn over. Since April, this exact same scenario has occurred half dozen times - after driving the car for some period of time and then letting it sit, only to leave and it will not start - wait for 30min-90min, and car starts. The last two times this occurred, waited for more than 2 hours and car wouldn't start so had the vehicle towed to dealership. This appears to be a common complaint with this make/model and yet manufacturer continues to turn a blind eye to consumers as well as turning their backs on the dealerships. I have been the sole owner of this vehicle and purchased it new to my specifications (internet order) and have followed the scheduled service/maintenance to the letter. 11 year old vehicle in Nov, with 151,000 miles - they don't make them like the used to.

There was a loss of all electrical components, power steering, and ABS. She had to pour cold water on the computer in order for the vehicle to restart and was almost struck by a semi-truck in the process. The contact was concerned for her safety and her life. The manufacturer would not assume any liability for the failures. A Dodge specialist stated that this was a frequent issue. The current and failure mileages were less than 170,000.
Electrical problem causing stalling in traffic. Engines shuts off because of short somewhere or computer failure. Replaced ignition coil and have checked wiring and battery connections but something in the PCM or sensors keeps failing on and off.

I bought my Durango last year and it has left me and my kids stranded on road many times in very dangerous situations because of no shoulder to pull out of way of other drivers, it shuts down without warning, loses all power, restarts in 1-30 minutes but will shut down again within a few miles especially on hot days. First replaced fuel pump then relay switches and problem still continues, nothing ever shows on the diagnostics. Three mechanics have been unable to figure it out but I still had to pay for their time so here I am with only one vehicle that I still owe money for and can't depend on it to get me anywhere. I drive everyday in fear that my car is going to stall and get me or my kids killed.

Upon further investigation, the contact determined that the wiring harness connection to the computer was failing. The vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer. I was on the highway and my vehicle shut down. When this happened I was doing 65 M.P.H. and lost control of the steering and braking which almost resulted in a crash with my toddler in the vehicle. I finally got some help from a passer by to get it off of the road and let the PCM cool down and it started again. This happens whenever it is above 70 degrees out side. I have contacted Dodge and they will not warranty this problem nor recall it. We need help. I have found over one hundred cases of this happening and Dodge will do nothing about it. Please help before some one gets killed if they haven't already this is serious. A new P.C.M. cost between $800 and $1200 dollars and the same thing keeps happening. The other thing on the 1998 and 1999 Durango is the oil pump screens are to small and keeps ca]using engine failure in the same manner as the problem above. 1999 Dodge Durango-so many problems with this vehicle. Had to replace the computer due to overheating-common problem I hear. Now the upper and lower ball joints are bad and need replaced or my tires could fall off? lots of information that this is an extremely common problem and very very dangerous. Other years of derange have been recalled because of ball joints being bad. I have not had an accident yet and am hoping not to. Can't afford all these repairs for things that seem to be a common issue with this vehicle.
1999 Dodge Durango 5.9 V8 stalls for no reason with no bus displayed where the mileage would normally be. I have had different sensors replaced. And unit still shuts down and is very hard to steer or stop the vehicle after the loss of power. No one hurt or killed, but vehicle is unsafe to drive. As far as incident date. It happens just about every time I drive the Durango and sometimes a 30 minute ride the vehicle can stall as many as 2-3 times.

The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer stated that no compensation would be made because the dealer stated that the vehicle has not had any failures besides the battery cables, battery, and PCM being replaced. The contact was advised to call the manufacturer back for further assistance if the failure recurs. The failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 80,000.

Vehicle shuts down without warning. In March 2007 the Durango started to loose all power and just shut down. We had it towed to a shop, and had new PCM installed. A few months ago, problem started to re-occur again. Had it towed a few more times, back in the shop to have new starter. Dies 2 days later, put in new battery and cables. Durango shut down in middle of busy intersection, and has now been towed to an auto shop.
