This has happened on numerous occasions. While driving, especially in extremely hot or extremely cool situations, the vehicle engine shuts down unexpectedly. First symptom - check engine light. Second symptom (3 seconds later) - fuel gauge from half full to empty. Third symptom (immediate) - low fuel warning light. Fourth symptom (2 seconds later) - low fuel warning light. Fifth symptom - engine shut down at highway speed. Completely lost vehicle control. No power steering, no power brakes. Muscled car to the side of the road and barely avoided an accident. Could have been easily killed. Problem appears PCM-related, but from what I've read, numerous people have paid $1,000 for a new PCM only to have the same results. This is a serious problem and has been reported thousands of times on the internet. I hope somebody does something with Dodge on this before a child is killed when the truck dies at highway speed.

Warm weather the engine quits. 3 time within two weeks driving 65-70 mph on highway while pulling a boat all 3 times. The problem is the PCM on the passengers side of the engine compartment. Gets to hot and shuts the engine down. No brakes, no steering! this problem is documented in Dodge forums thousands of times with everyone quoting the exact same issues with nothing being done nor any fixes that will work.

1999 Dodge Durango shuts down, electronically, while driving in warm/hot weather. This is directly related to the PCM and/or it's location. Very dangerous, even life threatening if on the freeway. Dodge does not recognize the problem, or safety issue, so forums and consumers are left to resolve this very huge problem. Only seems to exist on Dodge Durango's with the years 1999 and 2000. Problem can be resolved, for freeway use, with modifications to the vehicle; a 3-4 inch tube from the grill to the PCM. No fix, so far, for local use on hot days.

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact had the vehicle inspected by a mechanic who changed the distributor camp, wires, fuses and the crank sensor yet the failure recurred shortly after repairs. The contact stated that the mechanic advised that the computers were failing. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for further inspection or repairs. The failure mileage was 147,000 and current mileage was 155,000.

I own a Dodge Durango that is the worst vehicle I have ever purchased. It suffers from "shut off when it wants to syndrome" and the company won't even acknowledge that the problem exists even though it is the number one complaint about this particular model on the internet Durango sites. To make matters worse they don't even know what causes it to do that therefore making repairing the vehicle impossible. It is basically a death trap as when the engine shuts off so does the power steering and the brakes!!! the odometer reads nobus. We have changed several things such as the PCM about 6 times, crank shaft sensor, cam sensor, shut down relay, and fuel pump relay. We still have the same problem. We believe that this is a very serious problem that can cause many accidents. As for us we are tired of investing money so that the vehicle keeps doing the same thing of shutting down and not starting. Then having to get it towed home is not so cheap. If we can get a solution from Dodge that would be awesome. Thank you

Same as all the others, my Dodge Durango gets hot then shuts down. As it stalls, if you look at the digital odometer it will read "no bus" and the digital thermostat reads 141 degrees. After sitting anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes it restarts and runs fine for a while before doing it again. After much research I found it was the computer needed to be replaced. There's a company out in Florida that will send you a remanufactured one for about $500 and it's 4 bolts to change out. Come on Dodge, why can't you fix this mess"???"

I own a 99 Dodge Durango, 5.9 liter, the events to the failure were stalling while driving on freeway, at stop, in intersections, without warning. When attempting to restart, dash cluster would not function, read no bus on odometer, and show I had no fuel on gas gauge. Also when it would stall I would lose brakes and power steering, making it hard to get out of the way of traffic or move to the side of the road. The first time it happened I had my wife and 2 infants with me on the freeway doing 65 in the middle lane. Not only unexpected, extremely dangerous. Since then I will not allow my family in this car. Things that were done to correct the issue were fuel pump, cap and rotor, plugs, wires, crank sensor, and PCM. I have receipts for all work and parts. Old PCM not available due to core.

There was no warning signs leading up to the problem. My 99 Dodge Durango has shut down on me twice in the past week or so. I have been to many websites and heard from many that this is a common problem with this car. No one really knows what is wrong. I have heard that the ECU is too close to the engine's heat and causes it or the wires to short out especially in the summer heat. One it shuts off it will start again but it seems it needs a bit to cool down. I have not done anything to fix it yet cause I hear there is no solution. I have purchased some heat shielding tape and sheets to put around it but have not received them in the mail so have not tried it yet.

1999 Dodge Durango - engine stalls during driving, relates to computer overheating. I had the computer replaced but the problem returns. Vehicle very difficult to stop or turn D/T power loss. Last occurred in oncoming traffic lane while turning. Computer returns no codes but odometer displays no bus. Engine compartment is way too hot for this component so I do not expect anything to work except re-routing the wiring and mounting the computer outside the engine compartment. I have tried improved air flow and insulation but it simply gets too hot. I cannot stress the level of risk this problem presents. Had this occurred while I was pulling a trailer over one of my usual camping routes I would not be reporting this nor would anyone else in the vehicle because losing the engine on a canyon edge would make the vehicle impossible to stop. I refuse to drive the vehicle as this has now happened even on quick trips on slow flat roads. This failure has occurred 5 times now and is predictable. Hot weather, 5-15 minutes of driving, all components hot in engine compartment, let it all cool down and vehicle can re-start. Odometer blinks 4 times and returns no bus fault. Computer will not return a code and so is not covered under its warranty for replacement. This is not a question of if but when a class 1 mishap will occur.

Engine cuts off when cpu gets hot, you can wait a few minutes & engine will start & other times not. A lot of people online have had this same problem. Most of them have to get a new cpu, but looks like the problem will come back. The computer gets very very hot where it is located under the hood.

Truck shuts off and looses all power when the computer gets too hot. Either driving 70 mph on freeway or just idling very unsafe when you loose all power and cant stop or steer. Truck will not start till the ECM cools off then will happen 10 minutes down the road again.
