Owner 1998 Dodge Durango, have had to replace ball joints twice 1st at 50,000 miles and again at 90,000 miles, this last time had fire on R side of vehicle under car. I have a $1,600 bill at dealed for repairs most of it for ball joints. I notified daimlerchysler after the 1st time it happened. This time I would like to file complaint with your Agency.
Consumer took vehicle to dealer for routine maintenance, and mechanic determined that both upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced due to corrosion.
The vehicle was taken to dealer for routine general maintenance, and the mechanic determined that all four ball joints wore out prematurely. There was banging when the consumer would go over bumps. This was due to loose ball joints.
While driving the consumer heard a loud squeaking noise coming from the front end. The dealerships mechanic inform the consumer that the noise was due worn front upper/lower ball joints.

Today I replace the 6th...yes 6th ball joint in my Dodge Durango. One fell under warenty when I broung it back for other warrent work and it was fixed. That was around 20K miles. At around 40K miles I had to pay out of pocket for all 4 when I asked for a alinement. And today an aline ment was needed from hitting a pot hole and you guessed it another ball joint has gone bad in 12 months and 13kmiles. So my truck now with 53K miles have gone threw 6 ball joints 4 out of pocket cost and one just the cost of labor.
An independent mechanic replaced the upper and lower ball joints and the wheel bearings due to failure. Mechanic said that the ball joints failed prematurely. The failure of the wheel bearings occurred three weeks after replacement of ball joints. Tires were destroyed due to the failure of wheel bearings.
The driver took the vehicle to a gas station for a wheel alignment. The mechanic noticed that both upper and lower ball joints were worn and needed to be replaced.
While driving over uneven pavement there was a loud clanking sound coming from the front wheels. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic who informed the consumer that the upper and the lower ball joints needed to be replaced. The manufacturer and the dealer are not aware of the problem.

The consumer stated the vehicle made a loud clanking noise while backing out of the driveway. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer/mechanic and was told the ball joints failed and the vehicle had a cracked front disc rotor. Both lower and right upper ball joints were replaced.
PE 03-032 front susp. Upper ball joint failure: The consumer has had the lower ball joints replaced twice and the upper replaced once. The dealer is aware of the problem, but the manufacturer is not.
The consumer saw a news report about the ball joints on Dodge Durangos and took his vehicle to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic determined that the upper and lower ball joints were in "bad shape" and needed to be replaced.
My 1998 Dodge Durango continues to show problems with steering and front. There are only 57000 miles on this vehicle and the miles have been easy miles, (all on road and easy driving). I've replaced the power steering box, and the lower ball joints plus the front wheel bearing and drum. All of this has cost $550 the first time and $880 the second time. This cost come in addition to replacement a head gasket and rear windows that don't work.
Upper and lower ball joints worn out prematurely. My Durango has 59,000 miles on it and the upper and lower ball joints have to be replaced. The cost is $1,300.
2 independent diagnosis of ball joint problems. I had noticed bad tread wear on front tires. Two facilities both diagnosed the same problem. Ball joint failure on upper and lower front ball joints. Both recommended replacement with linkage. Car is a '98 model with 58,000 miles. Thank goodness the wheels had not come off.
The truck experienced uneven front tire tread wear. Upon the dealership performing a front end alignment, they noticed that 3 out of the 4 ball joints were bad.
While performing an oil change, the dealership noticed that all four ball joints were failing. Both rear ball joints were bad. The cause has yet to be determined.
