Drivers side wheel has a loud squeaking noise due to corrosion of the upper ball joint. Through a inspection this problem was spotted. Upper ball joint grease was non existent and the ball joint assembly appeared to be failing. When the vehicle was taken to the dealer, it was determined all four upper/lower ball joints on the left and right side needed to be replaced for safety reasons.
We recently had our Durango in for preventive manintenance and discoverd front end ball joints had abnormal wear and posed a serious hazard while driving. Further research on abnormal wear found that a number of Durango's reported same type of abnormality. We paid over $800 for repair and feel this type of problem should be strongly considered for recall regulations. This could have caused a serious accident to my family and other Durango owners as well.
I have been told that my ball joints are not safe and need to be replaced. I have also been told that this is a very common propblem with this make of car and there is an ongoing investigation.
Premature wear of both upper and lower ball joints on my 1998 Dodge Durango. The dealership where the vehicle was purchased new and serviced periodically wanted to replace them after 36000 (highway) miles at a cost of $1200. Two other Dodge dealerships have since reported the same problem.
We owned a 1998 Dodge Durango (just traded it in a couple of weeks ago). About a month or so ago we paid $800 to have the front ball joints replaced. We saw where you are investigating this alleged defect. There were no accidents or incidents caused by this defect.
Upper and lower ball joints on 1998 Dodge Durango need to be replaced. Evaluated at local Chrysler dealer and was told that ball joints would need to be replaced. Experiencing tire wear and humming vibration when driven in addition to loose steering. Problem found at 38,000 miles.
1998 Dodge Durango -after reading article of ball-joint failures we took our vechicle to the Dodge dealer. All four ball joints needed to be replaced-the upper two ball joints were"dangerously worn" and two were"excessively worn". the car has 70,000 miles.
Consumer stated that while driving at 50 mph a grinding sound was heard beneath vehicle. After taking vehicle to dealer it was learned that the upper front ball joints were completely worn out. About six months later vehicle needed front lower ball joints replaced because they too were worn out.
Consumer states that while driving at 50 mph vehicle shimmied vigorously alerting consumer to a what he thought was a suspension problem. The real problem was worn out ball joints.
