I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota and the rear differential seal went out, lost fluid and resulted in bearing failure. Had it rebuilt by the best shop in town. Two months later whining returned. Bearing replaced under warranty. Two months later and I just dropped it off because the whining returned AGAIN! Shop owner, he is a pro, 50+ years experience said this is a common Dodge problem. Once the factory bearings are gone, none of the replacements last. Even replacement bearings from the dealer don't last either. He has discussed this with every bearing mfg and even Detroit - no answers.

Dakota V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 69,000 miles

My truck has 69,000 miles and the rear end went while driving on highway at 70 mph. It felt like a flat tire or rumbling on the side of the road. (Lines that are suppose to keep you awake.) Smoke started to come from the back. The fire truck was called but thank God it was only smoke. When the mechanic looked at it he said he was cherry hot and it was good that I stop because it was close to the gas tank and it could have went. Thank God I was in the fast lane and got off as soon as possible. I have found out now that Dodge are know for having problems with the rear end due to the plug being low. So my mechanic rebuilt mine and made adjustment to where the plug is.

I am not happy with Dodge, if they knew there was a problem the owners should be notified. Someone could have been hurt.
