The car was in repeatedly for climate control issues - couldn't regulate heat, different vent temps when setting were the same - finally changed control module which seemed to fix the climate issue. Now the system seems to be opening and closing vent doors constantly with clunking and thumping happening all the time - all the time - from when the car is first started and when driving. Of course the car is now out of warranty so this mystery repair would be on me. Given the low mileage and CC history I think this is an extension of the degrading quality of the system as a whole.
