The car has been good and never leaks or smells of oil but it drops about a quart every 800 miles or so. When I finally realized it was a problem (actually my wife's car) it was sounding like a washing machine on a long trip. I noticed it went a tick hotter then normal on the gauge and decided it might be low on oil. Boy was I right, it was over 3 quarts low, not even visible on the stick! So I keep an eye on it now but it can still go exceptionally low if I don''t check it between oil changes. I guess this is the new norm for most cars because what prompted me to write this was an article stating new BMW and others also burn oil.
