On my long road trip this summer my Windshield Wipers started to fail in New Brunswick. I stopped at a parts store in St. Pascal Quebec to change the wiper blades on my car. My right wiper arm failed completely on the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago in a torrential Rain Storm.
My drivers side wiper arm would sometimes only lift half way or not at all and crash into the other one. Quite annoying and naturally there was a lot of rain on my drive. I looked at the Wiper issue when i finally got back to my drive way the first thing i tried was tightening up the nut on the wiper arm. That did not work, so i tried tightening it up some more and with a snapping sound the wiper arm broke... oops.
Off to the junk yard I went and i found an almost exact wiper arm from a 1988 Mercury Tracer. I tried installing that and tightened that up to much to and broke it too doh!
I decided to take the Wiper system apart after removing the wiper motor and disconnecting the linkage I diagnosed the problem. the pin that holds the drivers side bushing was occasionally moving with the linkage when it should be stationary. I took the linkage to a machine shop and he jammed a sturdy metal pin to prevent the other pin from moving.
After getting back home and installing everything the wiper system has worked perfect ever since.
