I asked the mechanic last time I had the oil changed what these ugly, lumpy spots are that are developing under the top coat of paint at the edge of the hood and the edge of the back hatch. He said "rust". This vehicle is only 7 years old! The last Chrysler product I had was a Dodge Caravan, it was a 2003 and had 325000 miles on it when my son hit a deer and totalled it out.......no rust. The 2013 only has 77000 miles on it and has had the a/c worked on twice (one compressor, one replacement of the lines), two new sets of tires due to dry rot, battery replaced, front springs replaced after they got brittle and broke into pieces, and now this paint issue. This is my 4th, and most likely last, Chrysler product because a vehicle should not be doing all of this before it even hits the 100000 mileage mark. I have to wait for the rain to subside to take pictures of this mess, but the edge of the hood is not a "Minnesota" issue. It is too high up to be salt on the road causing the problem. The back hatch lip also should not be doing this. There are a lot of pitted areas popping up and rusting all the way up to the top of the license plate holder all over that back hatch. This vehicle does not have enough acceleration capability to throw rocks up that high on the body from the rear wheels, which, by design it could not do anyway. The local shop owner told me I need to contact Chrysler to see if there was any kind of remedy, as they were aware of some vehicles with paint problems. This is that notification. Not certain what actions to take now.
