Air bag warning light began flashing in January 2012; cruise control & stereo controls on steering wheel quit working in June 2012; horn quit working in July 2012. Read about recall on 1994 - 2000 models for faulty clockspring.
The contact owns a 2000 Chrysler Town and country. While driving approximately 60 mph on normal road conditions, the air bag warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The indicator remained lit until the engine was turned off. In addition, the cruise control worked intermittently. Recently, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that NHTSA campaign id number 04V480000 (air bags) was related to the air bag clockspring assembly. The technician stated that a diagnostic must be performed to warrant the recall defect repair. The diagnostic test cost $90. The contact was displeased to know that there was a cost associated with the recall defect remedy. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000 and current mileage was 153,000.
Event leading to failure: None -(low battery) apparently causes failure (wear/tear item) meaning this is guaranteed to happen every 4-5 years! failure: Sudden failure of the tachometer and speedometer guages - after work was performed dealer claimed the PCM module shut off (do not know what this is) which apparently controls these items. Correction: Battery replaced due to low battery - apparently I was told that, by design, the PCM module will shut off on a low current condition from the battery but still allow the motor vehicle to operate. This places the vehicle in a condition that it is illegal to drive the vehicle with an inoperable speedometer. In addition, since the module is 'shutoff', no battery warning or check engine warning indicators function to notify you of a problem. This was incorrectly replaced 6 months earlier (Jan 2005) with a new speedometer control.
