My 1996 Chrysler Town & Country minivan has a faulty clockspring assembly. My airbag warning light lamp is on and my cruise control and horn do not work. The "clock spring" should be covered, but manufacturer says they won't warranty it. Inspite of service contract. *** dims 11 IVOQ entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****755758.
While sitting at an intersection another vehicle rear end into his vehicle. The airbags didn't deploy at all and the dealership is aware of the problem.
Consumer states that airbag light has illuminated. Took to dealer and dealer stated clock spring needs replacing. Consumer feels airbag may not deploy.
Vehicle was involved in a rear end collision at 45 mph or less and neither air bag deployed. Dealer and manufacturer have not been notified at this time. Feel free to provide any further information.
Consumer was traveling 55mph and another vehicle cut in front, causing a head on collision. Front airbags didn't deploy. Consumer and passenger sustained major injuries. Both vehicles were totaled. Weeks before accident, consumer had been back and forth complaining that airbag light was going on and off, and horn stopped working. Dealer didn't have a remedy as to why the ABS light was coming off.
Clockspring ribbon wire broke disabling both front air bags, the horn and the cruise control. Clockspring ribbon conductors both severed and shorted to each other. Disassembly of mechanism found that ribbon wire was stuck together and not able to flex and rotate with steel wheel rotation. It appears that the lubricant used in the clockspring assembly degraded and glued the ribbon together. Free end of ribbon flexed back and forth during steering wheel movement until it folded over on itself (180 degree fold) and eventually failed. Vehicle operated in phoenix, Arizona for the past four years. Extreme summer heat may have caused lubricant breakdown.
