CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 is the worst year for PT Cruiser engine complaints. Having an engine light on is annoying, but it's the complaints about the engine shutting-off while driving that really have us concerned.

Red oil light on - Oil had been changed at this same shop 7 months prior with no apparent problem.
Dipstick showed NO oil. Performed High Mileage Oil Change and added UV dye to diagnose where leaks were. Return to mechanic one week later showed significant oil leaks from multiple parts. Replaced cracked gasket, crankshaft & camshaft o-rings. Mechanic & tech suggested replacing timing belt, water pump & oil pan (kit) at this high mileage while parts are accessible, which was done.
Returned 1 week later to fix rough idle and loudly squeaking engine. Idle was adjusted and tech instructed me to give it a "break in period" to end the squeak. Returned two weeks after that due to continuing loud engine squeak. Belts were replace (at no additional charge) and tech said coolant may have dripped onto belts, causing the squeak that would not go away. Vehicle appears to be running smoothly now, although still due for a 100,000 mile engine tune-up.
