Extreme shudder and vibration while car is in drive. When you manually go through the gears at high RPM the problem isn't as bad. But at regular driving speeds the problem is very apparent. It was diagnosed as a bad torque converter from a aamco transmission shop. I had the original torque converter replaced with a genuine daimler Chrysler Mercedes part. The problem went away for 3 months and now its back. The warranty for the part was for only 90 days so I can't even get warranty work on the part. I believe that the torque converters are defective. It cost me $1600 to have it replaced originally. I don't have another $1600 to have it done again.
When I started 2006 Chrysler 300 and attempted to put in gear, the gear shifter would not work. The vehicle was stuck in park. I had to have vehicle towed to dealership and they had to replace the transmission shifter assembly. I had to pay for towing ($130.40), rental car($86), and to replace the shifter assembly($249.18)! the service rep said to keep receipt because this was a big problem with that particular model and this should be a recall repair. But not at that time. The car had 40,556 miles on it when this incedent happened.
Due to substandard design, the material used to insure proper gear shifting fails. After much research, it appears to be common. The cost of repair and towing does not seem fair when the problem is so common.

My 2006 Chrysler 300 will not shift out of park. I start the car, pressed the brake, but the shifter will not move out of park. I called the factory and they said there was a recall but it does not apply to may car.
Yesterday, I came out to my Chrysler 300 (2006) to start it and the gear shifts would not work. I could not put the car into drive, neutral, reverse or any other shift. When I notified a Chrysler dealer about it I was told that there had in fact been many vehicles with this same problem and they had been recalled. However, when he looked up my vehicle, although it had the same problem was not on the recall list. When I notified Chrysler headquarters, they told me the reason was because it was not built in one of the plants the other vehicles were built in. Further more they told me that because my warranty had expired I was unable to get any help. Also because the previous owner may have caused the damage. So when I called them the next day to see if this decision could be overturned they told me my case was closed and would not be reopened. Now, I am stuck paying the bill to get my car fixed in addition to facing a loss for work.
Upon starting car (2006 Chrysler 300), would not shift out of "park". attempted multiple times. Tow truck had to be called. Tow truck driver stated that this happens a lot with this model car. While en route, recommended removal of the panel around the shifter where there is a release-type mechanism. Multiple attempts did not release shifter. Tow truck driver arrived at scene and eventually released car into neutral. He said that as long as we did not place into park, we should be able to drive the car home. Decision was made to tow car home due to the remote location of stranded car and late hour. Will be contacting dealership in morning.
7/16/2010 I parked on the street in front of my house. I turned the car off and decided I wanted to park closer to the curb. I turned the car on and it would not shift out of park. I had the car towed on 7/18/2010. The tow truck driver said he knew exactly what was wrong with the car, and that in the last 2 weeks he had towed close to 20 Chrysler brand vehicles with the same problem. The shifters are having to be replaced, because of a broken part. I was fortunate I was at home and had already parked. Needless to say I have to pay to have the car repaired $350 for parts and labor. I'm grateful it didn't happen in a different gear, in traffic and on the high way. The dealer will start work on my Chrysler 300 tomorrow and it is my intention to inquire about the old part.
Own a 2006 Chrysler 300, that is stuck in park. I could not get to work today. I have been researching online all day & it seems that this is a common occurrence in this vehicle model. I have called several dealerships & there is no recall even though I see people complaining about it all over the internet. It will cost me $350 to replace the gear shift assembly plus towing. I have tried all the suggestions online to attempt to get the car into gear, but none work. I can not believe this has not been recalled. I was told by one dealer that the reason the manufacturer has not recalled it is because it is "not a safety issue". many of the service tech's I spoke with this morning state that they see this happen often!!!!
2006 Chrysler 300 limited rwd - could not put car into drive. Last use was fine, but went to use car next day and couldn't move shifter into drive. Putting foot on brake allowed shift handle it to move right further but not down to next gear (reverse). Rocking car did nothing. Researched on internet and found reference to shifter pink plastic piece breaks off which attached to return spring. Called dealer - told need to have it towed in and replace shifter - they're just starting to see this problem more frequently. Removed silver shifter trim bezel, disconnected small cable from key switch interlock, then rotated pink plastic piece under the front of the shifter (not the pink plastic tab on the side of the shifter) so I could put car in neutral and use the car and avoid the hassle and embarrassment of towing. Drove car to dealer the next day. They replaced the shifter - about a $500 job but given a goodwill exchange so it cost $100. Since I live in the phoenix metro area (read hot - hot - hot) - this will happen again in another 3 years because the same cheap replacement part was installed. Stevie wonder could see this is an outright designed in defect - using some cheap pink plastic part in a high use area. There supposedly is a metal replacement part to fix this but you need to tear apart the car and the shifter assembly to replace it. You need to remove a bunch of trim panels and bust a knuckle or two to get the shifter out. I would have had it out in about 10 minutes if they hadn't molded the "large" base plate as part of the shifter which makes the small shifter assembly twice the size of the opening.
