Fortunately, I was stopped in traffic on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC. When the light went green there was absolutely NO POWER. It was rush hour, so everybody was honking, but they eventually went around me. When the traffic light behind me went red and there happened to be no one in the lane next to mine, I released the hand brake, grabbed the wheel and was able to force it around clockwise and slide over into a small street to my right. Remembering all the instructions to the power failures in GM cars, I took the key out of the ignition, took the house key off the ring, then reinserted the key in the ignition. Twisting it to the right and then the left various times, the engine finally caught.
Thank GOD this did not happen when the car was in motion on the busy 4-6 pm rush hour with everyone going at a fast pace. Next time, I will call the car company to come rescue me -- not try to solve the problem -- so they have to experience what can happen!
I immediately went on the NHTSA web page to report the event. I had the 500 Radials many years ago and it took 3 blow outs before I got the recall. Wonder how many it takes for ignition switch failures?
