My 2017 Chevy Volt has been sitting at the dealer for a year, waiting for a part that is still not available. In early October 2023, the car demonstrated a problem similar to the classic Battery Energy Control Module problem, except it was a different part causing the problem. The car would barely accelerate, and the dash message read "Propulsion is Reduced." After about a day, the car would not start. It was towed to the local Chevy Dealer in Elmira NY. The dealer determined that it needed a new EGR valve in the emission system. This part has never been available through an entire years' time, and it still isn't.
As of this date (October 6, 2024), there is still no estimated time of arrival for the part. I recently called customer service, and they sent me to a parts delay department. I can't reach the agent who has been assigned to may case (it always goes to voice mail). The agent did leave me a phone message stating there is no estimated time of arrival for that part. Yes, the dealer knows this. I already know this. It's not helpful to just keep stating they don't have the part and they don't know when they will have the part. This is the most outrageous situation I have ever heard of for a car repair. It is covered under warranty, but what does that matter if the part can't be obtained? The dealer has provided me with rentals and loaners to drive, but at this point, I think Chevy should be required to buy the car back from me at the Kelley Blue Book value. It's junk.
It previously had the Battery Energy Control Module problem as well, only 6 months prior to the EGR valve issue. But apparently I got lucky with that one, as they were able to get the part within a reasonable time frame (a few weeks). It's severely disappointing because prior to these problems, I loved this VOLT. It was like having an electric car without the range anxiety. Most of the time I drove it locally and just ran off the battery, but had the gas back up for very occasional longer trips. This is the most disappointing car situation I've experienced in my lifetime (I'm well into middle age).
