This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The car regularly gets an airbag light relating to the passenger seat presence sensor. The airbag light will randomly come on and then turn off as I drive.
No unusual activity. No spills or other occurrence that could cause sensor to fail. Passenger seat presence detection sensor has failed. Car now reports a "service airbag" warning and has disabled the passenger side airbag because of it. This is a life-threatening error caused by a simple sensor failure that is showing a high failure rate with countless complaints on the internet. Most people are not repairing this sensor as it cost $1000 to $2000 to repair through the dealers that are not discounting or covering the cost of repair under warranty.
I am getting an airbag warning light caused by a faulty passenger presence module. If I have a passenger riding with me, the warning light will go on and off sometimes caused by hitting bumps in the road. When the light is on though, it says the passenger airbag is off which is a very big safety concern. The vehicle has never been in a wreck or had any liquid spilled on the seat.
Continuously receive a "service airbag system" warning. Began happening for no apparent reason. Warning stays on all the time (as soon as vehicle is started). Dealership investigated and determined that the passenger side seat sensor for the airbag must be replaced, at a high cost (~$800). Without this repair, it is possible that the passenger side air bag may not deploy in the event of an accident (sensor does not indicate that someone is seated on passenger side, so only driver's side may deploy).

(Chevy Volt 2013) a warning message "service airbags" intermittently shows. The car has not been involved in accidents. It appears to be a very common issues among Chevy Volt owners (including 2 people in my family who own the same car model) the warning shows while driving and disappears after a few seconds.
The check airbag indicator light and the passenger airbag go on and off repeatedly even if a passenger is in the seat. The passenger presence system has failed at 70,000 miles. It happens whenever the vehicle is being driven making it unsafe to have a passenger in the front seat. I have read several GM and Volt blogs and this seems to be a common problem with 2012 and 2013 Volt.
Component designed to detect passenger sitting on the passenger seat has failed causing the airbag to remain off. Dealer says the passenger presence detection module in the seat cushion has failed. I had a similar issue with VW which was a recall, however GM is not recalling these faulty vehicles. This could cause an airbag to not inflate during a crash.
Just paid $975 to have the passenger air bag sensor replaced on my 2013 Chevy Volt. I was informed by the GM Volt thread that this a manufacturing issue with the Chevy Volts and is happening to many Volt owners.
The passenger presence sensor failed in my Volt several years ago. Since it's no longer under warranty, the dealer quoted me $1000 to fix this issue. This is a critical safety issue and Chevy should recall these because it's a very common problem. The airbag is often not activated when I have a passenger due to the fact that the sensor has failed and can't sense a person in the seat. Critical safety issue! not to mention, the airbag warning light is intermittent and extremely obnoxious beeping multiple times every time I drive now. This seat has never been wet and the car has never been in an accident. Also, I rarely have passengers.
Passenger seat airbag sensor intermittently malfunctioning causing airbag to disable while passenger is present in the vehicle. Vehicle presents 'service airbag' message in the dashboard and passenger airbag indicator is set to off
The passenger airbag wont work because the sensor in the seat is broken. Chevy is charging over $1,000 to repair. There has never been an accident. It happened out of nowhere. When reading online this is happening to a lot of people and the repair cost is extremely high for something that is completely Chevy's fault.
The passenger side airbag sensor is failing. The car is not that old. We have had no spills in the car. But the airbag sensor is coming on. We paid the dealer $180 to look at it, but they found nothing wrong. Now the sensor light is coming on every time we start the car. It is out of warranty, and fixing will cost up to $1500. That is crazy. Many other people have had this problem with their Chevy Volts.
While in motion my car sporadically displays "service air bag system." Upon diagnosis, dealer stated the passenger presence module needed to be replaced. This car is only 5 years old with 77,000 miles. Seems like a serious safety hazard for this item to be failing. Researching Chevrolet Volt owner forum yields numerous cases of this same issue.
Air bag passenger seat occupancy sensor failure. When there is no passenger in the seat the air bag warning lite comes on. When an adult is in the seat the light does not come on unless the person moves around, then it comes on and then resets itself.
Passenger airbag sensor light came on and turns on and off randomly whether or not passenger is occupying the passenger seat. Unsafe if there is an accident as airbags won't deploy.
