Getting a message alert "service airbag" for the passenger airbag. It will turn off and on when a passenger is seated. Extremely dangerous and seems to be a common issue. I think Chevy is at fault and should fix the issue at their expense.
The passenger airbag seatbelt sensor faulty and gives notice on display. Intermittently stops turning on passenger airbag when someone is sitting in it. I has been doing this for about 3 years and does it everytime while driving. I have seen hundreds of posts online with the same issue. This is the second time I have filed this same complaint with no response.
Airbag warning light and passenger air bag. Was told by a dealer that it was the passenger detection sensor not working and needs a 1,000 dollar fix to replace the sensor. Air bag system will not enable with full size passenger in front seat.
1) passenger air bag notices keeps coming on despite there being no passenger. Only goes away when I buckle the seatbelt 2)passenger seatbelt warning keeps coming on, only way to stop it is by buckling seatbelt 3)airbar ligtht goes on and off. Will indicate it needs service and then go away for a day or two before coming back on. 4) drive rotor bearing. Had it repaired and within a few months started making same noises again. Common issue with early generation Volts based on research.
The service airbag message appears randomly when in motion. The Chevy dealer states that the problem is the passenger presence system. The estimated cost to repair is $1,300.

The passenger air bag is intermittently turning off on my 2013 Chevrolet Volt when I have an adult in the front passenger seat. This is very scary as there will be times when the air bag is off for 5 minutes at a time. As well this is a very annoying chime and distracting, and it occurs even when there is no passenger. From my research the cost to repair is roughly $800-$1,000 which minimizes the chances of doing the work as this is an expensive repair.
My Volt service airbag light comes on and off all the time. When I go to make an appointment with service the light is off. My understanding is many Volt owners are having this issue with their cars. In all my years of driving different vehicles I've never had an airbag issue with a car. Chevy needs to stand behind this airbag issue!! a repair bill of over $800 is not acceptable!!
Began having intermittent "service airbag" warnings. Finally failed solid. Dealer diagnosed the problem to be a short circuit in the passenger present sensor in the passenger seat. Repair cost $1100. I declined repair. Dealer said this fault makes the entire airbag system inoperable. Tried to buy the repair part and was informed by an online GM parts source it was on national backorder. No idea when it will be available. This seems like a critical safety issue and a common problem in Chevy vehicles. A recall should be issued.
Air bag light stays on. Replaced driver seat with no change. Chevy dealership advised the issue now is the passenger seat sensors and quoted me $1000 to fix. They also told me there is only one part available in the usa and they dont know if the holder will sell it. This puts my car and passengers in danger if there is an accident. Chevy needs to address/fix this.
Airbag will at random say to "service airbag" this usually happens after an object or person has sat in the passenger seat and has then exited the vehicle. Message does not persist between trips.
The 'service airbag' keeps coming on and off. With any movement in the passenger seat, the light comes on and off. I already had car inspected and I still have the same issue.
Service air bag light illuminated around 40K miles. Has been on since. Code is saying the passenger presence module to be bad. I believe this is the case as I can press on the seat very hard with my knee and sometimes get the module to sense the weight, however when seated normally it never senses a passenger, and I am 185 pounds.
Passenger front seat sensor for airbag system malfunctions, resulting in passenger airbag being turned off while adult passenger is in seat. This occurs when the vehicle is moving or stationary and both in town and on the highway. Dealer indicated this repair would cost nearly $1000 (~$500 in parts and over $400 labor).
A warning light appears sporadically reporting that the passenger airbag needs to be serviced. If the passenger wiggles around, the airbag will turn on and the warning light goes out.
Airbag warning light and "service airbag soon" appears on dash. Vehicle is not in motion or is in low-speed travel only when light/ notification appears. Light/ notification disappears within a few seconds. Issue only appears to happen when temperature inside vehicle is extremely high (leading me to believe that expansion of cushion/ seat material in high heat may be causing weak contact activations. G-force when accelerating/ decelerating may be causing sensor/ seat material to move/ shift in such a way to release weak contact). Brought to dealer for $200 diagnosis. Reported problem as passenger seat next-gen airbag sensor module failing. Cost to repair $1200+ reviewed many online forums and posts returning same issue and cost for repair for Chevrolet vehicles in same model and platform range (Malibu, Impala, Volt, Cruze).
The passenger detection sensor failed which affects functionality of passenger airbag. For some reason this wasn't covered covered under extended warranty.
Sevice airbag msg and the indicator light (red) comes on on dash and "ding dong" sound. Sometimes it goes off when passenger is in front seat. Sometimes it does not. Sometimes it comes on immediately upon start up and sometimes while driving. It is very sporatic and also very worrisome. Just started doing this a couple weeks ago and seems to be happening more frequently. Was on tonight going to work (night shift rn). Driving confitions don't seem to matter. Just if someone is innthe passenger seat or not.
Service air bag light has been on for six months, three different dealers has given different reasons and none of them has been able to replicate the differing claims. All three dealers estimates between $900 to $1,100 as possible resolution cost.
Airbag light on dash came on. Scheduled service visit with local Chevy dealer who diagnosed a faulty front passenger presence sensor. Cost to fix with labor $913.60. Failing seat sensor appears to be a common issue with 2012/13 Chevy Volts.
