It all started when the transmission would occasionally slip out of gear. Then it started getting worse. Occasionally when downshifting, the van wouldn't drop gears when merging on the highway, creating a very dangerous situation. Things got worse when the transmission delayed going into gear. A grinding sound began to sound from the transmission. Finally, it died when it wouldn't shift out of first gear. When replacing, a major pitfall is you're confined to using 1997 transmissions since they redesigned them in 1998.
After paying $1200 for a used transmission, everything seems to be fine. Now, at 290,000, its starting to show signs of trouble when downshifting....
