Traverse 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 65,000 miles

The car just died, no power steering or brakes-nothing, while driving the car. Would not start after getting it safely on the side of the road. We were driving 55mph at the time it happened. Thankfully, we decided not to take the highway on this day. Tried to restart, nothing! Eventually did start with horrible clanking noise. Had the vehicle towed to an authorized dealership. They looked at it on 10/14/2020 and advised that the engine blew. We were advised to contact GM directly regarding reimbursement for replacement engine. In the mean time, the dealership recommended rebuilt motor. We called GM and were told someone would be in contact with us within 24/48 hours and to keep our phone lines open.

A week later, we called GM. They stated the case was closed. We told them what happened and were told again someone would call us back. We had the dealership repair the vehicle with the rebuilt engine since the body of the vehicle is in great shape and the original engine only had 65k miles on it. After 33 days we were told by GM they were not going to help with the cost since we opted to replace the engine with a rebuilt one. They would have had to have put a rebuilt one in anyway due to the age of the vehicle. We have been calling them continuously for the past 33 days trying to get someone to make a decision regarding the vehicle.

We were blatantly ignored throughout the process and hung up on mid sentence. We had to demand to speak to a supervisor and then we were just constantly lied to. We have been buying GM products our entire adult lives. Not anymore! This is so unprofessional the way we were treated. We have contacted the BBB and we are mailing a letter to GM with all correspondence we have had with their company so far.

Traverse LX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles

We have been "Chevy" people for most of my life. My husbands Silverado has 180K, father in law has had many with over 200K. So when I was looking at a new family vehicle, the Traverse seemed like a great option. All wheel drive, 3 rows and Chevy/American made quality. I was wrong!

Although I bought used it was own by one other person who has all the service records as myself. I had just hit 70K miles and planning a 1500K road trip to Disneyland with the family, so I took my car in for an oil change and "look over". Said I am taking my babies on the road and want to make sure we are safe and sound. 1 oil change and a brake flush later I picked my car up … driving really weird so took back. Oh $900.00 later, the struts the manufacturer (Chevy) used had failed at 70K! Ok.. ok... take care of it, and at least we will be safe.

1 hour into our trip, in the mountains near nothing going 65 mph, the car just shuts down. Thank god my husband sensed something odd, caught the gauges going crazy and got us over just in time for everything (power steering, etc.) to just stop. Thank god, we were so close to being nailed by a log truck because the car just STOPPED! Ok, can't ruin this family vacation we have saved and booked, get a rental $750.00, enjoy the trip, get my car towed home $100.00 and after trying to deal with local dealerships (garbage).

I took to a respectable mechanic. Every diagnosis they ran on my engine indicated it is toast, $11,000.00 for a new engine, no rebuild available. Are you kidding me! So I still owe a small amount on this as it was new to me, so if, which I won't, replace the engine, it is more repairs then the car is worth. I am in contact with GM and hope they can stand behind the product and do something about the two early life failures and dangerous issue they have with this model.

I did a lot of research before purchasing what was planned to be my long term transportation. In 2014, I purchased a lease turn-in with only 12,000 miles. No one else has ever driven my Traverse except service staff at the dealership. I gave this vehicle excellent care, including regularly scheduled maintenance, an added program that flushed the coolant and changed filters every 30,000 miles, and washed it at least 2 or 3 times a week. It was kept inside my garage when not being driven.

In the couple of months before the engine "literally" blew up, I kept hearing a "ticking" sound like I had never before heard in a vehicle, mostly when traveling at speeds between 35 and 45 mph. The dealership said they could find nothing wrong. I was on my way to a routine doctor appointment, just entering a round-about, speed was about 10 to 15 mph, when I heard a "sizzling" sound, like when fireworks are set off. The dash displayed the message "tracking control off" and then "check tracking control soon" and the engine quit. (The "check tracking control" had previously appeared on the dash, but the dealership found "nothing wrong.") I coasted through the round-about, and off the pavement.

When I tried to restart the engine, absolutely nothing happened. I had it towed to the dealership in Adrian, Michigan and the next day was advised that I needed a new engine. I could not get a straight answer from anyone in the service department confirming that this would not happen again if I bought another one of these engines. Ultimately, (with 2 more years of car payments), I paid to have the engine replaced - but NOT at a Chevy dealer. A very reputable auto repair shop recommended a "Jasper" motor. They were very surprised at the extensive damage to the engine, stating that it was the worst they had ever seen. Because the block was not "usable" and shrapnel from the "engine explosion" destroyed attached parts (such as the oil dipstick tube, air intake manifold cover, etc.) it cost me more than the original estimate of about $6,800.00.

Just got the vehicle back and it was running very well, first oil change at 500 miles, and the blasted starter went out. The garage believes this might be related to the engine failure. I contacted Chevrolet Corporation and they initially offered to help with "some of the expense of the repairs." However, when they learned the work was NOT done at a Chevy facility, they basically said, "screw you!"

This was my first Chevy and it will DEFINITELY be my LAST!!! I had always owned Fords, driving them anywhere from 250,000 to 350,000 miles before "giving them up." The worst problem I every had was a bad wheel bearing that needed to be replaced.

Update from Jul 5, 2019: Please correct 2 "typo's" in my post: 1) it is a "BLOWN" engine rather than a "BLOW" engine - makes us sound like idiots as it now appears. 2) typo in the last sentence of my post - now appears as "the worst problem I every had . . . " should read "The worst problem I ever had . . . " Thank you Tricia T, Tecumseh, MI
