2002 Chevy Trailblazer gas tank leak. Had it replaced because it was rusted. Cost $867. Should there be a recall on this?

The engine light continues to come on after it has been turned off. The problem has been recurring over the last several years. More than four diagnostic test have been performed. Vacuum problem. No resolutions. Gas smell when car initially is started up.

I have been smelling a gasoline odor on the side of my SUV where the fuel door/fuel tank is located. Research on the internet yielded many Trailblazer owners reporting fuel tank/sending unit/pump corrosion resulting in a fuel leak. A family member of mine just had this exact problem repaired on a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. I believe this same issue is starting with my 2002 Trailblazer. I replaced the gas cap to eliminate the possibility of the gas odor coming from the tank fill area, but the odor persisted. The odor resembles an actual gasoline spill and/or leak and not just gasoline vapor odor, ie: Filling the tank. Like I stated before, internet research yields many Trailblazer owners reporting this issue and having to pay for costly repairs. Any issue regarding the fuel system/gasoline, in my opinion, should be an immediate safety concern. I have not received any information from GM in regards to a recall bulletin. I am going to conduct more investigation, but in the meantime the smell of a gasoline leak is unmistakable. I hope this information is helpful and I hope that a recourse regarding this issue and its repairs can be formulated. In the meantime I feel that a major safety issue is present and needs fast and efficient attention. Thank you. The consumer stated the fuel pump was severely corroded on the top including two fuel lines that exit the top of the fuel pump. There was a fuel leak resulting from corrosion. The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that he smelled an unusually overpowering fuel odor. He inspected the vehicle and noticed that fuel was on the rear of the fuel tank and the fuel lines were rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000 and the current mileage was approximately 141,000. GM sent consumer a letter regarding extended coverage on the fuel tank modular reservoir. Updated 01/21/11

I have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer that has had a host of problems to date. Now I am experiencing two more. Twice in the past few months I have been driving down the road with a 1/4 of a tank of gas or better when suddenly the car stalls, the gas gauge goes to empty. If I sit for a moment and then restart the car, the gas gauge goes back to 1/4 full or better. It is very frightening when the car just suddenly stalls out without warning. The other problem is the ABS system is now coming on when it should not. In the past two weeks I have had trouble bringing the car to a stop. The ABS comes on and disengages the brakes and the car skids ahead instead of stopping immediately. We had the same thing happen on our 2000 Chevy Silverado truck. It was fixed under recall, then started happening again after a couple of years. When we called Chevy, they said they only fix under recall once. We were able to disengage the ABS. I have my service station looking now to see if we can disengage the ABS on the Trailblazer too. These Chevy are a real hazard!

There is a very bad gas smell coming from my 2002 Trailblazer. From what I'm led to believe it's the gas tank and the fuel pump. I have not had it replaced as of yet but I'm sure I going to have to at my expense. I think it should have been a recall if it is an error on their behave. With all the complaints I'm finding on the internet I think it was something they may have missed.

Came home after refueling my 2002 Chevy Trailblazer ltz w/151000mi, noticed strong smell of gasoline. Never noticed before - thought I just spilled some. Smell persisted, looked under hood, under car, noticed fuel dripping down from fuel tank. Called GM cust svc 866-790-5600 was advised there is special coverage for warranty replacement of plastic tank to remedy corrosion. Supervisor confirmed my VIN is in range but would not honor warranty - they only cover to 10yr-120K mi. Vehicle has never been in an accident, so crack in tank must be a manufacturing defect - plastic tank should last the life of the vehicle. GM refuses to accept responsibility for defective tank.

On 9/25/09, my 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer stalled and lost power steering when I attempted to make a right turn. When I tried to restart the vehicle, gasoline was caused to spill on the roadway. The vehicle was towed to my local repair shop, and it was determined the fuel filter fitting failed. My vehicle had 39, 993 miles on it at that time. After my vehicle was repaired, further research revealed a recall had been issued under number 02V121000 for the same problem described above. I contacted GM/Chevrolet, and was advised that recall did not pertain to my VIN, nor were there any other recalls issued for my vehicle addressing similar failures. It is obvious that my vehicle should have also been included in the recall mentioned above.

There was a smell of gas, so I took it in to the dealer after they said it should be covered. They found rotted fuel module and hoses, removed fuel tank found fuel sending unit rotted, lines and hoses..replaced sending unit lines and hoses. Mdle kit 3.107 part# 19206122..pipe 3.163 part#15174333...pipe 3.163 part#15015511...sensor 3.107 part#16238399.. now tell me it would have been covered if I brought it in earlier, I only just got the notice to have it looked at, so how could I have brought it in earlier.

I received a letter for my 2002 Chevy Trailblazer...on corrosion areas listed in Ohio on the fuel tank modular reservoir assembly. It does state 10 years to 120,000 miles....I purchased this vehicle used at over 130,000 miles and they sent me this letter.....they will not help me fix it....is there anything that I can do? it does leak gas!

I have had to already replace the coil pack in my 2002 Chevy Trailblazer ls a few months ago and not it seems that it or another on is gone bad again the truck is sputtering, lose of power, no speed. I love this vehicle and have already made on complaint about it I also know of several others that have this vehicle and have also reported problems with the same thing. Chevy needs to recall these vehicles and attempt to find out what the problem is.

I notice a strong gasoline smell at first, then a large amount of gas became evident at idle in the driveway. I took vehicle into the shop and was informed of the "rotted out" pump flange was leaking. I paid almost $700 to have it fixed and complained to the dealer. 12 months later the GM/delphi pump failed and I had to pay to have it replaced again!

I own a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer lt. For the last two weeks there is a very strong odor of gasoline. Apparently it is leaking from the top of the tank. I understand that GM is paying for repairs of this problem on 2002 Trailblazer ext's under a special coverage warranty. If my vehicle has the same problem the ext, why isn't GM applying that coverage to the lt?

During routine driving I noticed a odor of gas from inside my vehicle. Upon inspection I discovered gas leaking from above the gas tank and onto the ground. I brought my vehicle to the dealership and was informed that the fuel module had rotted and therefore was leaking gas onto the top of the gas tank. The gas would then collect on top of the gas tank and cause a strong odor of gas inside the vehicle. I had the fuel module replaced for a total cost of $810.52
