I have heard many other Chevrolet owners complain about this same problem. The fuel gauge is very inconsistent. I will leave the house with 1/2 tank of gas, drive down the road 5 miles and the gas light will come on and stay on. It appears they made several of the automobiles with faulty fuel delivery systems.
Recently (Sept 07) my gas gauge has started malfunctioning. I can fill up the tank and the gauge will read half-full (yes, sitting on perfectly level ground). I'll then drive a few miles to work, park it for the day, then it will read full when I go to drive home. Or it can show nearly empty with the light on, so I go to fill up and it will only take 12 gallons. Or the fuel light will come on as I'm driving down the road, and then I'll have a third of a tank 10 minutes later when I look at the gauge.
