Unfortunately Chevy says this is the sending unit, and must remove the gas tank, and while I'm at it, replace the fuel pump. Cost of this is only around a thousand dollars give or take, depending on which service advisor I talk too. I can live with it. It is only intermittent, reasonably accurate when it works, so aside from the low fuel light flashing at night, this is not a must do repair.
I admit resetting the trip mileage after each fill up however.
