My 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe spare tire cable(s) broke on Sunday, Sept 12. I was traveling less than 40mph coming onto an exit, looked in my rear view mirror and suddenly saw a tire that was not there seconds ago. I pulled to the side, backed up and realize my tire was in the middle of the highway belonged to me. Thank god, the person driving the car behind me was able to miss hitting it. Monday, September 13, I called Chevrolet customer service. I asked if there were similar reports of spare tires coming off from underneath vehicles? I was told by jovi no. 'there were no reports of spare tires coming off (I find that difficult to believe when I see the many stories online). My vehicle is 10 years old, (I've owned for 8) it is in great condition, body looks good and runs well, at that time it had 208K miles. Jovi advised that I take to dealership, have them inspect and based on their findings, Chevrolet will have to decide if they will assist w/ having it repaired. She gave me a "heads up" that it may be due to the age, and mileage of the vehicle and if so, Chevrolet will need to make decision. Royal Chevrolet service personnel informed me "the cables broke". they were unable to tell me the reason why. Jovi contacted the dealership to know their findings she informed me on Thursday, September 16, she was told the tire coming off "could" be due to age, mileage and wear and tear, however the vehicle was in good condition and well maintained per the service department. Jovi said Chevrolet will be unable to assist w/ having it repaired (cost apprx $238 ' on Monday, I volunteered to pay up to 1.5 hours of labor fees). I was not happy w/ their decision and requested she receive a "definite answer". her saying 'could be' was not a definitive of the problem therefore, in my opinion, I felt Chevrolet should assist in the repair cost. Jovi, called the service department again and what do you know? this time, they can say for certain it was due to age, mileage.
