About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The contact states there is a NHTSA recall campaign 01T001000, concerning the tires:tread/belt. The vehicle had the same problems as indicated in the recall. This caused the tire to blowout on the front passenger's side. When he contacted the dealership, they claimed the tire was not included due to the serial number. The tire has been replaced at consumer's expense.
Tire failed suddenly and without warning. Tread separated violently breaking out internal wheel well component and adjacent window wash line. Location was IH35 South of san antonio. Level, smooth road surface. Time - 9:00 pm temperature - 70 F. (dot number: Mexico tiresize: P265/70R16)
The tread on the left rear tire separated without warning, resulting in immediate tire failure. I was traveling at seventy miles per hour on a flat section of ih 35 South of san antonio. Temperature was approximately 55 degrees F. time was approximately 9:00 pm. The tire literally came apart with flying pieces breaking out the plastic internal wheel well assembly and rear window wash hose lines. On 3/12/02 the dealer service center will check for any additional damage. The vehicle remained relatively stable but did cross over the adjacent lane and on to the road shoulder. I have taken photographs of ( and will retain) the tire. When trouble with Firestone wilderness tires was intially made public I contacted the Chevrolet dealer and was assured that the problem tires were a different type. When I reported the subject incident to the dealer he suggested that I contact the area GMC service center (1 800 222 1020). After reviewing the problem with the GMC representive I was informed that "to her personal knowledge" I was the first to have this problem. I then asked if someone calls in at some future time and asks if there has been any trouble with this tire would they be told that at least one person has had trouble. I was told that GMC's information system that she uses did not have the capabillity to distribute this information in a comprehensive manner. She did assure me that the design engineers would be made aware. I was also told that I probably would not hear from GMC again about this matter. I informed the representive that I wanted some assurance that the information about this potentially dangerous problem with this tire be, at the least, made available to the next person that inquires about this model of Firestone tire. She suggested that I call Firestone (1 800 356 4644). This rep., in turn, assured me that "to her knowledge" there have been no problems with this model tire, etc, etc. (dot number: Mexico tiresize: P265/70R16)

Major tread separation on the right rear of our new Suburban, at highway speed and near boise, Idaho. Fortunately the vehicle was removed from the freeway without loss of control. The boise, Idaho Firestone dealer refused to warrantee the tire, saying the cause was abuse. The tire is 6 months old and can be proved to be monitored regularly. The dealer required that we pay retail for the replacement tire, without any assistance. The tread failure is exactly like the description of the Wilderness AT failures. We want to bring this to your attention because of our traumatic experience and the fact that the le 16" tire is not on the recall list. We would also appreciate your assistance in getting the remaining three tires replaced, as we are not comfortable in driving our new vehicle any longer. We will next be in contact with the selling dealership, to see if the can help us.( dot number: Tire size: 265/70R16 )
The tire developed severe tread displacement and disfigurement. Luckily, we noticed the vibration when it started and pulled off immediately. We had very little warning. It started all of a sudden. We were on the expressway, at 70 mph, with 5 people and a load of luggage. It was 98 degrees out at the time the tire failed. The tire was kept by the Chevrolet dealer in fernandina beach. Fl. their name is ron anderson Chevrolet, 904-261-5776. David dubose in service has the tires. They replaced all 4 of the wilderness tires on the vehicle.( dot number: N/a tire size: P265/70R16 )
