CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is fairly new & is already showing an early trend of transmission problems.
Owners report hesitation when shifting & grinding/hard shifting into gears. Some dealers are calling the condition "normal". Another owner reported his dealership replaced the transmission under warranty, but the new transmission had the same exact grinding problem. Design defect?

While driving out of town, (129 miles away from home), my partner was driving on the highway at 65 mph with the cruise control on. The car hit a slight bump and the traction control kicked in; also both the TC and engine light came on. As the car immediately slowed down, he tried to press on the gas peddle to increase speed, but realized it wouldn't due to the TC slowing the engine. The car slowed from 65 to 45 mph almost immediately. He turned on the flasher, and tried to take the cruise off. The cruise control went to off, but the TC would not let go, even when pressing on the gas peddle until he was safely stopped on the shoulder of the highway. After calming his nerves for a second. he turned the engine off then back on. The TC light stayed off, but the check engine stayed on. He had no choice but drove another 9 miles to his destination, and thankfully he made it. I'm hoping the light clears itself overnight, otherwise I will have to go get him, and get that car transported back.
This happened to me when I was driving the car last year as we were going out of town. I drove the car back home 50 miles with the check engine light on. It finely cleared itself overnight. When mentioning this at the dealer. it didn't have a code, so nothing was done.
