This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
This truck had a Goodyear tire blowout while driving about 45 mph. The truck was less than a year old, but there was vibration in the steering since the first day it was purchased. Goodyear replaced all four tires and the vibration stopped. The blown up tire was defective.
On July 1, 1999, had a flat on a Firestone tire while driving. Tread did not come off tire, but tire came apart inside and could not be fixed. On 9/21/00 identical problem with tire that was replaced due to 7/1/99 incident. No indication of loss of air other than where tire had separated. (dot number: Unknown tiresize: P265/75R16)
The tire split from bead to tread when I ran over a pvc pipe at less than 1/2mph. The pipe was not broken so there were no sharp edges and the impact did not break the pipe. When I contacted the local dealer he refused to replace the tire saying it was a road hazard. I asked for a number to call and was refered to an office in nashvilletn. I called and talked to a person who identified himself as rock. I told him what happened and he refused to authorize the replacement of the tire saying it was a road hazard. I told him that these were off road tires that should not have so easily ruptured. He told me that they had to make the sidewalls thin because people like me wanted their truck to ride smooth and the vehicle manufacturers made them build them that way. I told him that I did not believe that. He told me that he did not care what I thought as I was not one of their customers but was just using their product. I then hung up but called a customer relations number listed on the internet. I told the lady that took my call what "rock" had said and she called the local dealer and authorized the replacement of the tire. I am still concerned about this model tire. Tire underwent sudden and complete (360 deg.) tread separation at approx. 65 mph after having been driving about one hour at speeds of (60-70mph). Weather was clear, temp (95-100deg.). tire was routinely inspected and kept inflated at factory recommended level of 35psi. Tire had experienced no prior puncture or other damage. All four tires on the vehicle have been replaced and are in my possession and available for inspection. (dot number: W273 tiresize: P265/75R16)
This tire separated on me. It threw the tread off just like the 15" tires that are being recalled. It caused me to run off the road onto the shoulder, but no damage or injury to me or my truck occurred. There was 56% of the tread left on the tire.the Firestone dealer found no apparent road damage to the tire to cause the separation.( dot number: ? tire size: Lt24575R16 )
Traveling down winding 6% mountianous grade pulling trailer on busy laborday weekend. I could feel a slight vibration begin to build, I told my wife who was driving to slow down immediatly and pull off to the shoulder. As she worked her way over a loud pop could be heard, luckly we had slowed conciderablly. The truck started to wiggle as we pulled off to the shoulder. The tread had started to delaminate from the sidewall. Had I not been very attuned to the feel of the truck and road we may have been the next to be in the newspaper. We are afraid to drive our 1 year old truck at sppeeds over 45 mph.( dot number: W273 tire size: P265/75R16 )

I am not sure what happened. I was driving along on a relatively straight stretch of road and the next thing I knew I was having an air-bag for brunch. The investigating officer and the insurance adjuster both said that the left front tire looked suspicious. It appeared to have blown out the sidewall and tread area.due to the restraints and vehicle design I was fortunate to not be seriously injured however I did total a fairly new vehicle when I hit a concrete culvert abutment.( dot number: Not avail.
