I have a 2001 cheverolet Silverado 2500 hd ext. Cab. The sideview mirrors have a defective part in the breakaway mechanism that causes them to 'breakaway' completely. This just happened to my passenger side mirror and six months ago happened to the driver side. Whatever piece they used inside the mirror is defective. I've never heard this happeining to any vehicle other that Chevy trucks and SUV's from 2000 to 2003.
