The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. On June 14, 2007, at 84,000 miles, the contact took the vehicle to have the brakes serviced. The mechanic found that the back side of the rotors were completely rusted, except for a half inch of pad. The mechanic stated that this caused the contact to lose one wheels worth of combined braking. All four rotors had to be replaced, totaling $468.49 in repairs. The current and failure mileages were 84,159. Updated 02/01/08.

: the contact stated the brakes where applied at 8-10pmh and the ABS engaged, resulting in the contact having a crash. To avoid a rear end collision, the contact left the road and hit an embankment on the passenger side of the vehicle. The police did not take a report at the scene and no injuries were sustained. After the accident the contact received a recall 05V379000, concerning the antilock brakes. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, the speed sensors were cleaned and it was determined the hydraulic pump needed to be replaced. However, the dealer was not able to determine whether the brake failure and accident were caused by the ABS sensor or the hydraulic pump. The contact felt the pump should have been included in the recall campaign. Additionally, the brake rotors were replaced, due to corrosion, after only 4,000 miles.

The emergency brake has been used very rarely, but with just over 40K on it they eventually faded out enough to fail inspection. The dealership advised me that I must have drove with it on. I never used it, yet they collected over $200 to repair a defect. Over time I noticed the tension progressively weakened. Rusting on the rotors is extremely common, yet GM ignores the problem. I was told by the dealership on multiple occasions that it was from condensation. It causes premature failure of the brake pads & a rotor replace as a resolution(turning alone doesn't remove the rust). My other family member have had all the exact issues with the same type trucks(three different 2000 GMC/Chevy). My rotors will be replaced in the summer, however my braking is reduced due to rust wearing the pads unevenly.

The contact stated there was a recall on the ABS brakes. Has contacted the manufacturer, and they will replace the ABS speed sensors, but they will not replace the rotors. The contact was having a problem with the rotors. They were corroded. He had the rotors turned and put back on vehicle with new pads. The ABS speed sensors were still not working correctly. Updated 12/27/05.

The consumer states that 2000 Chevrolet Silverado was having a problem with the ABS system. When the consumer pressed down on the brakes they sounded like they were grinding. The ABS was engaged at low speeds. The vehicle has been checked by a repair shop, and was having the sensors cleaned. The consumer has been in contact with GM, and they said that they did not have a recall. The consumer has replaced the rotors and pads. The speed was 10 mph or below.

All of the rotors rusted and had severe corrosion prior to my truck having even 8000 miles. Yes that # of miles is correct only 8000. I was told by other general motor truck GMC, Tahoe etc similar vehicles that this is normal due to the poor quality of materials used. I have purchased new after market rotors that are not corroding as the originals did. I have kept my original rotors to remind me of GM quality for my next truck purchase which turns out to be a Ford F250 2005. I really think that GM should be held responsible for the rotor problem, it is not because of our climate as I have lived in the virgin islands and have owned many different vehicles foreign and domestic and have never seen rotors deteriorate like on this 2000 Silverado. The NHTSA needs to hold Chevrolet responsible they should not be able to purchase rotors from inferior venders and then blame the problem on the customers climate, I am a far ways from the northern states. I still have not had my tailgate cables replaced as the dealer never has them in stock. But they are still good. What about my 1996 Chevrolet S-10 those cables have rusted and broke and are not covered under the recall.

The consumer received NHTSA recall 05V161000 and GM recall 05042 concerning parking brake failure. The dealership told the consumer that if they had to take the rotors off the truck they were damaged the consumer would have to pay to have them fixed or buy new rotors. The dealership told the consumer that the rotors were about $400 to be repaired. The consumer has not been in contact with manufacturer. The consumer called and got the recorded message.

Consumer states at 44,000 miles the rotors, pads and wheel bearings were replaced. Six months later the wheel speed ABS sensor have failed. Could not stop the vehicle when going between 2 and 8 mph. Consumer took vehicle to a Goodyear dealership, and was told there was a technical service bulletin on the ABS brakes. Number not available. Consumer was going to call General Motors today. The problem occurred regularly.

Front and rear brake rotors rusting on 2000 Chevy silerado 4X4. Dealer replace rear only last year. I wanted all 4 replaced then. Just had a close call with stopping distance. Inspected brakes and found rear rotor rusted completely and front inside of rotors rust.

Wheels on 2000 Chevy Silverado were squelling and chirping while driving. Truck has 54,000 miles on it. Took truck to brake specialist who found all rotors and calipers badly rusted. 2 calipers were frozen up. They advised GM used rotors w/O chromium in them to retard rust. Parts are being repaired at this time. Estimated repairs just under $1900. I have asked for the parts to be given to me. Updated 12/22/05.

Contact stated: Contact was having a problem with emergency brake. The emergency brake fell apart into pieces. The repair shop replaced the brake shoe pad and the rear rotors. Also, the dealer had to replace the monitor speed sensor which indicated that the ABS was over active. While driving 10 mph vehicle made a noise while hitting the brakes. It almost caused an accident when the ABS was applied.

I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado with 42,000 miles and my brake rotors are severely rusted. This is an unsafe condition and clearly a defect in metallurgy. I am astounded to find thru my dealer (midway Chevy olds) that GM is not standing behind this defect. I found through web research that many other owners had the same problem.

Problems with 2000 Chevrolet Silverado rotors, wheels, tailgate strap, drive shaft, and 4-wheel drive. Nar see ODI#10037613 ES03-006296. At 12000 miles both rear rotors had to be replaced, 2000 miles later both front rotors had to be replaced. A clunking sound was heard in the rear of the vehicle. The consumer believes it either the rear suspension or drive shaft. All four of the vehicle's wheels had to be replaced at 6000 miles because they were rusting. The tailgate strap broke at 17000 miles. When the four wheel drive was engaged there was a growling noise.
