code po420 catalytic converter failure to meet emissions I just complained of CODE 307, the failed engine lifter in cylinder 7. It cost me 20% of the repair value to fix or $498 with tax in NY State.
OK, I have the lifter in cylinder 7 fixed. THANK GOD, no need for a camshaft to be replaced.
I pay the clerk. I drive (5) miles down the road at 50 mph. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGGHT COMES ON. I urn around and return to the dealer near Brewster, NY. I get out. The service rep does not say anything. I tell him, I drove five miles down the road, then the CHECK ENGINE light illuminated, so I came back. I was gone 12 minutes from the time I picked-up the vehicle.
After 15 minutes, the service rep comes to the lounge and says CODE PO420: Catalytic Converter does not meet emissions standards. The cost is $1,500 with tax included. He tells me the failed cylinder lifter CODE 307 caused fuel to not be spent, so raw un-spent fuel flowed through the system and RUINED THE CATALYTIC converter. He said when I pulled in with the CODE 307 issue, the PO420 does not register until after the CODE 307 (Failed engine lifter) is fixed and cleared.
I say, WHOA, you offer me 20% deductible for the CODE 307 repair. I took it for $498. I will pay you $300 (20% for a new catalytic converter) not $1,500. I leave very angry, but calm.
The next day, the service rep call me and says $900 is the best he can do. I make no money. I say this is Chevrolet issue, not yours. You need to get Chevrolet to authorize me to pay only 20%. He said that was not possible.
He gave me a bottle of Cataclean to try and "clean" or the catalytic converter. The Cataclean did not remove the PO420 error code.
OUTCOME: The PO420 error on the left bank (the side with failed cylinder 7 lifter) was sensed from the rear oxygen sensor on the left bank catalytic converter. The cause of a ruined catalytic converter was created because of failed lifter in cylinder 7 sent too much un-spent fuel into the left catalytic converter. The AFM malfunctioned, there were misfires, the lifter in cylinder 7 failed, the un-spent fuel then ruined the left catalytic converter.
Chevrolet-> You must offer me $300.00 to replace my entire catalytic converter because it failed due to extra un-spent fuel from a failed lifter in cylinder 7 and misfires from the AFM not working properly.
