Backing out of parking spot at Walmart & steering wheel started to shutter then it stopped. Drove home. Next day started out fine & then received "Trailer brake needs service" message followed by "Warning power steering needs service" at the same time I lost my power steering as I was driving around a sharp turn. Lost steering, muscled it, steering came back, then had message "Drive carefully going to lose steering assist soon." Then I lost steering again. Pulled over, restarted vehicle & everything started to work again. I was 20 miles from home. This happened about 5 times on my way home.

If my wife was driving the truck she would have ended up in a ditch because I had to muscle the truck in order to stay on the road. It would happen so fast that I had no warning. The light would come on and the steering assist would be gone at the same time. Our 1 year warranty expired 2 weeks before the incident. I notified the dealership and they advised me to bring it in for diagnostic check for $130.00 & they advised me that they were the lowest place to go for diagnostic testing. The next morning there was absolutely no power steering at all. I could barely get it into my garage.

Meanwhile, we found a YouTube video. The guy is awesome & knows his stuff! He did all the diagnostics & found the issue & fixed it. On the video, we learned that the dealers were not finding this issue! It's the ground strap from behind the left front wheel & it runs from the frame of the truck to the body of the truck. One dealer charged a customer over $800. in restocking fees and diagnostics! They were going to charge the poor guy thousands and it's a ground cable for under $20.00! SMH GM needs to step up & recall this. Looks like dealers are milking their customers for repairing things that are not even broken! We replaced our ground strap today & the truck seems to be working fine now. This is a very dangerous thing & somebody is going to get killed!!!!! I hope my post here makes a difference for someone.

I love my truck but shouldn't because of some of the weird issues with it. On Friday got a message saying something about the trailer brakes and the power steering assist. Lost all power steering for a short period and then it came back on. We were not trailering. Sunday at a stop went to make a right turn and suddenly the messages flashed again and no power steering in the middle of turning at an intersection going about 10 mph. Crossed into the other lane lucky no one was oncoming! Pulled over and shut off the truck. Restarted it and still no power steering. Limped it home.

Monday called the dealership and they suspect it's a ground strap because this has been happening often. I called NHTSA and filed a complaint. I also called GM, they told me there was nothing they could do because there was no damage. In other words they couldn't do anything because we didn't crash, WTF! We can request a reimbursement after repairs are made. I'm kinda pissed off because it took me 2 min to look up on line and find what the problem is and the dealership immediately knew what was wrong and GM is like well you didn't crash so we can't help you.

I see similar complaints on this website not surprising most are NYS.

Silverado 1500 RST 5.2L V8

Trailer brake warning flashed first then power steering was lost completely, luckily I was only pulling out of a parking spot and managed to get it the two blocks to a friends. parked truck overnight then tried to move it the following day and more warning lights flashed (service side detection, service power steering, service backup camera etc. ) Two days later I was able to start and get truck to move with no issues however during my drive the warning lights flashed and power steering was lost again nearly causing me to run into off ramp guardrail. I was able to research the issue and several others reported same issue with the dealerships suggesting several expensive part replacements including power steering module among others. When I was able to get the truck into the dealer I specifically told them to start the diagnosis by checking for corrosion on the Grounding strap located under the chassis and not to just start ordering parts. Received a call 2 days later and they told me that was exactly what the issue was and the repair would cost around $400.

Silverado 1500 LT 2.7L

My truck had set for 3 days as it has before and the battery went dead. The next thing after driving 1 block I lost power steering and it took about 100 lbs. of effort to steer. I can't imagine what would have happened if my wife had to drive this way.

What is the repair so this doesn't happen again.

I own a new 2019 Silverado LT Trailboss. I came out to start the vehicle and take my family for a ride. Upon starting the truck, the dashboard warned of caution service power steering. I was in park at the time and the column appeared not to turn the front wheels due to a loss of power steering. I shut the truck off and restarted the vehicle and the same warning appeared again. I tried reverse and determined it was unsafe to drive and shut it off. I waited three minutes and tried starting it again and the problem went away. So I drove away and have about another 50 miles since, and have not seen the warning again. I'm very concerned as I drive on the highway and backroads a lot. The drag of no power steering was a problem - it seemed impossible to move the steering wheel when turning.

Update from Nov 21, 2019: Dealership found a low voltage error code was tripped. They found battery had a very low charge of 50%. It took 60 minutes to recharge. They said they found not issue with the alternator and could not explain why the battery was low. I had driven the vehicle for plenty of hours and it was not sitting long.
