CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 has an early trend of the transmission shifting hard, surging & jerking.

At the moment these trucks are still under warranty. However this transmission problem shows up right away with the average reported mileage only around 3,000 miles, so for now the 2017 Silverado earns our "Beware of the Clunker" badge.

While turning vehicle at slow speeds the trailer warning, no trailer on vehicle, stability control hill assist radio and steering stop working as well as vehicle will stall out. Depending on when it happens it may stall while turning into traffic. I have searched the issue and found there is a ground problem under dash near windshield. It has happened multiple times like 15 as of this date.

In reverse my brakes dont work, its like they are grinding, ive changed the rear brakes hoping to fix the issue, i have no codes. It has almost made me wreck due to failure to stop with my kids in the truck, also the afm system is defective in order to keep my engine as safe as possible i had to put a afm deactivate plug into the obd port. Ive tried to figure out the brakes but no one can explain. Spending 34 thousand dollars i expect to have my vehicle safe for my children. I have been strictly chevy my whole life but this is unacceptable. Where we live in alaska id expect the vehicle to be in order and it does it mainly at steep hills and it hasnt done it when ive had people look at it.

Complete loss of electrical system power and engine power, vehicle stalls and Coast to a stop. This has happened seven different times in the last 4000 miles driven. Possibly due to faulty ground connection electric power steering system and or stabilitrak I don't know but it is very dangerous. And there has been many other people experiencing this on Silverado Facebook groups.

2017 Silverado with 6L80, 59k miles - transmission failure due to TCC failure. Rough shifting, coming out of gear, shuttering when accelerating. Truck started to whine loudly when it was promptly taken to the dealership. Dealership dropped the pan and used magnet. Visible metal was in the transmission pan. There were no indicator lights on the dash from this issue. Requested goodwill warranty, gm replied they would cover 20% or $7k so I am stuck to pay $5k for a known issue. The replacement transmission is not new that they are offering, it is "certified refurbished" where they use the old casing with new internals. They are providing a 3yr/100k miles warranty on the new transmission. Deciding factors from GM were age, miles, service at dealership. Incredibly unsatisfied that GM is standing behind their vehicles not lasting 60k miles.

There is a specific serpentine belt that controls the AC and the water pump on this vehicle. That particular belt is 100% obsolete. The manufacturer has discontinued that part and since it is a stretch belt, it cannot be replicated by Gates or Continental until they get their hands on an unused and uninstalled belt. This has caused us to no longer be able to operate the vehicle and now we are upside down thousands of dollars because the vehicle is now a total loss and insurance wont cover it.

18V586. GM's own number for this recall is 18289. These are for the 2015 Silverado-??s. The 2017 Silverado 1500 are doing the same thing as the recall from above describes. My wife had almost accidents cause of this. I almost had an accident today as well getting off the freeway. I know a lot of people are having these problems as well. Gm needs to own up to this mistake they did with these trucks. They should be held responsible for this defect on this truck.

The engine lifter failed. The lifters collapsed on the highway. The inspection is available upon request. My husband was the driving on the highway and heard a tapping noise. All the engine lights came on and he pulled off to side of highway and was instructed not do drive the vehicle. The vehicle needed to be towed and was not drivable. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and confirmed if was the lifters which needed to be replaced. There were no warning signs, no lamps, no lights prior to the failure to alert something was wrong. After paying for the repairs at the dealer in the amount of $5,441.18 and other expenses, we reached out to Chevrolet Customer Assistance asking for them to cover the cost of this repair. We did not have time to get an extended warranty since this vehicle is new. With a vehicle having 56,000 miles on it, it should not be having engine problems. Our argument and frustration is GM knew of this problem on this particular vehicle and did not request a recall and this model. They refused to give us a full refund and gave us $2,720.29. We appreciate the assistance, but after doing research on this problem, this is a common concern and many customers have had to have their lifters replaced. GM knows of this issue and did nothing to correct their mistake. I have never experienced engine problems on any of the vehicles I have owned for over 10 to 15years old.

Vehicle exhibited a loud bang from the engine compartment followed by a ticking noise from the engine and loss of power while highway driving in a remote rural area. Check engine light did illuminate. Vehicle was subsequently towed and issue was diagnosed by an independent repair shop as a failure of an active fuel management valve lifter and was repaired. Approximately 10,000 miles later while also at speed on a congested highway the vehicle experienced a second failure 12 July 2023. No dash lights nor warning indicators were illuminated, though problem was indicated by severe loss of power and very rough idle. Issue was diagnosed by dealership as failure of #4 and #6 cylinder AFM lifters....which were replaced new following the first failure in summer 2022.
