CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 has an early trend of the transmission shifting hard, surging & jerking.

At the moment these trucks are still under warranty. However this transmission problem shows up right away with the average reported mileage only around 3,000 miles, so for now the 2017 Silverado earns our "Beware of the Clunker" badge.

I am fully aware of of GM-??s Hydra-Matic 8L90 transmission or Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmission on the 2015-2019 models. My wife was driving with our kids on the highway yesterday and the trucks immediate shaking, increased high RPMs, slow acceleration and violent downshifting. Scared them very much on the highway while going at the normal speeds of 65mph trying weave through traffic and make it back home on top of that. With zero warning and this having happened on my first 2011 Chevy Silverado as well. I know full well there are more class action lawsuits against GM. Them being allowed to get away with this consistent problem and not owning up to their failed products is unacceptable.

Bought my truck brand new in 2017 7 years at 119000 miles I was driving down the road stopped at a red light and when I proceeded to step on the gas when the light turn green my rpm would go up but the truck would not move in the middle of traffic I had to have it towed to a repair shop where I was informed there was an internal transmission failure which cost me nearly 10000 dollars out of pocket to fix never no check engine lights or notice before this happened or after

Vehicle shudder was noticed along with harsh shifting. Took to local shop and it was diagnosed as bad torque converter. Referred to transmission shop. Vehicle towed to transmission shop to avoid any further issues. Mechanic sent a picture of the magnet inside pan that was completely covered with metal shavings from torque converter. Mechanic stated new transmission would be necessary. Transmission was replaced February 2024. Truck had approximately 93000 miles on it.

At 83,000 miles the transmission failed. We bought this car from a Chevy dealership with 35k miles in November of 2021. We have performed all required maintenance. If GM knows there is a transmission issue with these trucks why won-??t they help their customers? It-??s a 7k bill on a truck with many more payments and that has less than 100k miles.

Transmission failed. As I was pulling a horse trailer the transmission went out of gear and left me on a curve in the roadway. No warring lights or any other kind of warning was given. I did take it to a dealer to have it checked out and was advised I would need a new transmission. The cost would be $7,000. I do not have the funds, therefore my truck is not drivable and is parked. I have learned this is a known problem with this transmission and GM is not doing anything about it. The very least they could do is pay for half of the repair cost.

Stalling with no power transmission is putting me at risk since I first purchased this vehicle. Transmission needs to be replaced because of the defective drive shaft on all 2017 models. Really serious problem with a hard shift and multiple misfire. Just not sure what to do at this point. I-??m still paying for a truck that-??s not working.

Transmission (6L80) torque converter failed at 76k miles. The transmission has never shifted well but was told that-??s how they shift. Vehicle is not used for towing. And all scheduled maintenance was followed. While driving down the road the transmission suddenly started shuttering and jerking. Luckily, I was able to make it to a transmission shop who confirmed the torque converter was shot. Called Chevy dealer and the service rep advised that there is a reason they have 30 of those transmissions on the shelf right now, it-??s a known issue. Unfortunately, it-??s outside the warranty. Transmission has already been replaced with a remanufactured 6L80. 500 miles after the new transmission installed, the torque converter went out again. Another 6L80 is scheduled to be put in. This transmission is unreliable and went out while driving down the highway. No warning lights ever came on to indicate any issues.

2017 Silverado with 6L80, 59k miles - transmission failure due to TCC failure. Rough shifting, coming out of gear, shuttering when accelerating. Truck started to whine loudly when it was promptly taken to the dealership. Dealership dropped the pan and used magnet. Visible metal was in the transmission pan. There were no indicator lights on the dash from this issue. Requested goodwill warranty, gm replied they would cover 20% or $7k so I am stuck to pay $5k for a known issue. The replacement transmission is not new that they are offering, it is "certified refurbished" where they use the old casing with new internals. They are providing a 3yr/100k miles warranty on the new transmission. Deciding factors from GM were age, miles, service at dealership. Incredibly unsatisfied that GM is standing behind their vehicles not lasting 60k miles.

While driving on the interstate the truck started jerking and vibrating, started slowing down, while in the fast lane, then a loud whining sound started, finally making over 3 lanes of traffic doing approximately 40mph got stopped on the shoulder. No warning lights or anything came on. Sat there not knowing what happened so I proceeded onto the freeway and it started lunging & squealing again, got off the next exit to find out it was probably the torque converter or transmission, so here I sit in Virginia & I live in Arizona stranded. And trying to figure out how to pay a $6000 to $8000 repair bill and to find out this is a common problem with GM transmissions
