CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 has an early trend of the transmission shifting hard, surging & jerking.

At the moment these trucks are still under warranty. However this transmission problem shows up right away with the average reported mileage only around 3,000 miles, so for now the 2017 Silverado earns our "Beware of the Clunker" badge.

My truck had the electronic brake control module reprogramming with sps as per recall N192268490 performed on November 11, 2019. The reprogramming worked fine for a few months. In March 2020, I noticed that at low speeds and mainly when backing, the brakes began to lose pressure and what sounded like and felt like the antilock brake system was engaging, and very hard pressure was needed to stop the truck with longer than expected braking occurring. As a few months more past, I did not recognize the problem much as we have quarantined during the covid-19 crisis and have not driven much. However, since late may, the problem has definitely worsened and occurs nearly every time braking at low speeds both moving forward and reverse. I have now seen the warning to service the brake assist message appear on my dash. On May 28th, 2020, while backing our boat into storage, this issue occurred and nearly sent the boat into the storage entry side wall as there is a slight hill just in front of our storage. I had to apply as much pressure as I possibly could to the brakes to stop the truck and boat before hitting the entry side wall. The issue occurred repeatedly as I had to maneuver the boat back and forth much differently to account for the braking issue. I notified my local Chevrolet service department and was told a new vacuum brake pump would need to be installed and would be at Chevrolet's expense.

Vehicle loses braking ability when in a slow-speed situation, such as when parking, going through a drive-through restaurant, or when in stop-and-go traffic. Brake pedal will go to the floor when the situation occurs. A noise may occur that appears to be the anti-lock braking system trying to engage. Pumping the brakes seems to restore functionality for a short period of time. The issue does not occur when the vehicle is traveling at street and highway speeds.

My truck began with a notification that says "service stabilitrak", over the course of 48 hours it went from on hard bumps and just the notification, to now constantly turning on. There was a recall for this issue with the ABS, but I have to pay the dealer out of pocket. They are currently doing the diagnosis on it to see what the issue is. If the issue matches the same ABS issue as the recalls for 2014-2018 models on the Silverado, would there be a way to fight the charges? the warning notification and icon would light up when either stationary or moving at any speed. 48 hours ago it would only do it when turning at almost full rotation, or driving over some cracks on the road. Now it just does it randomly and very often to where the brakes would shake when applied. Power also goes down a bit, and the wheel would jerk. Pretty much exactly as how all the prior complaints about it before the recall when it reached youtube. It makes driving very dangerous as I can be turning, then the wheel would spring back into a different position. Before this notification, when I apply the brake it would be very smooth. Now because the truck thinks there's some kind of ABS issue, when I brake, it would shake the brake response (like old cars before ABS) and also make the vehicle very unsteady. I cannot brake on a straight line as it would sway the vehicle.

Loss of brakes when in a slow mph situation such as drive-thru or parking lot situation. Requires significant pedal pressure to stop vehicle. Almost resulted in collision with vehicle in front of my truck, but was able to steer away before impact and stop safely. Many report of vacuum pump issue. Brakes have no power assist at slow speeds. Started when parking slowly in reverse, but also can do it moving forward. Brakes fail and require very hard press of brake pedal to engage at all! seems like vacuum pump is going out. Looks like a common complaint/problem that Chevy should recall and has not. It is a major safety issue!

While driving on a highway; approximately 55 mph, on a rainy day, I applied the brakes and they wouldn't grab. They were hard so I pumped the brakes twice again and they grabbed slowly but the pedal was very hard. That same day; while driving 5 mph, I applied the brakes and there was a trembling and a noise. This major and dangerous issue is intermit and needs to be addressed immediately. I explained this to the dealership and they have yet to follow-up to fix this problem. They said it was probably the engine-mounted mechanical vacuum pump.

While coming to a stop in turn lane, brake assist light came on. Intermittent issue. After couple days of experiencing, I take truck in to find out about recall. They perform reprogramming. Doesn't fix issue. Tell me I have to pay diagnostic fee. Thy find vacuum pump needs replacing. They covered cost under "special coverage" because they know it's faulty (but not covered already under recall?). they say it's fixed. I pick the truck up, brake assist light comes on driving out the parking lot. Take it back next day. They tell me "pin" in the connector is broken causing "ground fault." They charge me $500+ to run new wire in wire harness. Same connector that would have to be touched while replacing vacuum pump. I pay to have pin fixed. 3 weeks later, brake assist light comes back on with same exact symptoms. This time, they tell me ecbm need to be replaced. Not just reprogrammed. Somehow, the prior times, the error code wasn't stored. A) errors aren't being stored B) they're covering their warranty cost by charging for other adjacent parts C) brake assist issue going on for nearly 8 weeks now unresolved. They need to expand their recall to include adjacent "connectors" which the dealer admits hardly ever fail. Also should include vacuum pump not just as special coverage. Also, recall should expand to replace ecbm because apparently they aren't storing fault codes when they occur. I read this same thing across many forum posts online. All the same issues. Hard braking, or soft mechanical brake feel. I've now spent 1100 dollars on a problem that falls squarely within the description of the recall. They tell me that "these parts" aren't covered under the recall. I say, expand the recall. Recall states they don't have to include this in sec filings. I think they are under representing their true costs. My GM case #9-5696419690

Al these lights came on out of no where one cold day. Steering assist, ABS, break. Also service trailer brake, service stabilitrak. I went online there are so many people with the exact issue. Recall your mistake and fix your problem. Don't screw the customer. I locked up my brakes because the car in front of me and I almost hit them due to my ABS not working I fish tailed sideways. It's a matter of time before someone is hurt. It is a big issue many people have spoke about. I also explained to the guy when I scheduale the recall to be fixed and he said that my lights out a different issue the recall is just a program update for something with the brakes. Then I bring it there 45min later they cant update the truck and complete the recall due to the lights on in the truck!!! I'm just upset I explained everything before appointment and still got screwed. Also after looking there is a lot of people with the exact problem as me.. weird

Trailer brake control module light illuminated in the dash. This may cause the vehicle to be inoperable unexpectedly. This part may be associated with a reprogramming issue that was on another recall. Customer is burdened with repair costs and the module is in high demand as part of a 'national recall'. I have been waiting 6 weeks for the back ordered part. I was told it was delayed as result of a labor strike.

The ABS system failed when braking on a snowy, icy, slippery road locking all four wheels causing the vehicle to skid out of control. The brake light and ABS light and tcs icon were displayed. The brakes had to be released to regain steering control and judicious use of manual braking eventually brought the vehicle to a stop. The ABS pump motor was noted running continuously even with the engine off. Onstar diagnostics indicated a traction control system error. This braking failure occurred in conditions that the ABS is specifically designed to prevent loss of control!
