I purchased this vehicle new, and I love it, but the tranny has always been a source of concern from the very beginning. When I mention that the tranny is "clunky" the dealers typically say it's because it's a 4x4. That is BS to me. 80% of the time this truck drives like a Cadillac. Smooth and the shifting is the only thing that separates it from a luxury car. I don't tow, and I drive it like its a baby.

Today I took it in to the local dealership because yesterday it would clunk downshifting and up-shifting at stoplights. Then, transitioning from reverse to drive, I thought the tranny broke. I felt a huge clunk. So I drove it cautiously home and it seemed OK. Today on the way to the dealer, its totally fine. I anticipate they will find NOTHING wrong and I will just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Update from Oct 30, 2019: Dealership said they could duplicate the issue, so they looked up and found an update for the tranny shift control module. After the update, the problem went away. Now I have to drive it for 500 miles so that it will re-learn my driving style.

We shall see.....

Disappointing that this vehicle has to have the transmission flushed every 4-6 months to prevent issues.

When shifting park to drive or reverse clunk in rear axle, not in trans. I never trailered new trans and it's still there, I'm guessing pinion has an issue.

Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2L V8

Purchased a pre-owned 2016 Silverado 6.2 L V8 LTZ with approximately 54,000 miles and I noticed a very hard shift between first and second gear, most noticeably in parking lots. Also, almost a banging sound while driving at very low speeds. I brought it to the Chevy dealership and there is a TSB for the issue to flush out the automatic transmission with new fluid, addressing this concern.

The Chevy technician at the dealership noticed metal while he was performing the upgraded fluid change and noted that the torque converter needed replacing. Luckily for me it was under warranty and hopefully there’s no further transmission issues after this.

Silverado 1500 Z71 V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 96,000 miles

This truck is great but shifts like a bucking bronco. It even makes the tire squeal which concerns me when there's a cop around.

Hard shifts up and down. Particularly in the lower gears. Amco says it needs a new tranny. WTF?

And why is there no clear explanation about checking or adding transmission fluids?

Silverado 1500 Custom V8

  • Automatic transmission

I bought this 2016 Silverado on 9/20/2016 from Quirk of Manchester, NH. I had shifting problems with it soon after I bought it. I brought it back to Quirk Chevrolet on 11/15/2016. They told me there was no problems. I again brought it back on 1/5/17, same thing. They said they could not find any problems with the tranny clunking, thumping, bogging. I brought it back again 4/27/2017 same bs. They said there was nothing wrong.

I then contacted their district service manager and told him about the tranny problem. He offered me an extended warranty on the drive train until 5/30/2022 or 111000 miles. I was hoping there would be a recall. I had talked with a couple of 16 Silverado owners that were having similar problems.

I've been dealing with some medical problems and been hoping for a recall. This tranny problem has been bothering me for some time, so I called Quirk again and brought the truck back for the 4th time and again the same bs. I've had it and I am calling the Attorney General of NH tomorrow 10/26/201.

I got an email from you guys carcomplaints, com tonight on 10/25/2018 so I figured I'd sign up to your website. hopefully I will get some good news from you guys or the Attorney General, thanks

I have also experienced the transmission "slam" it happens after first staring the vehicle. It is almost as if the Transmission is selecting a higher gear than it needs, realizes it and drops into a lower gear, causing the slam. This usually happens at less than 5-10mph. Although I had it happen once while driving 60+, let off the accelerator briefly but then pressed it again to pass a car and got a huge slam. You do feel like you got rear ended and then you wonder if you are leaking transmission fluid.

I haven't bothered taking it in because it doesn't happen that often and seems to do no damage. But it is very unnerving. Plus what can a software update really fix? At least the one the dealer is going to do.

As for the comment about the "Driving habits learning" that is hogwash. There is no intelligence in these computers. If so, they would feel the "Slam" and say WTF man, and never do it again. LOL

Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 19,500 miles

I use my truck for basic commute and I’ve pulled a small boat a handful of times, no where close to the tow rating. For about a month now when I come to a stop the truck surges forward right before it stops completely and makes a hard bang sound like metal hitting metal. This same bang also happens when I begin to move forward, the first transmission shift, which is also very early before 8 mph.

What I am upset about is seeing so many people with issues yet as of today the dealership still claims this is normal. If there isn’t a fix for this in the next 6 months I am going with a Ford or Toyota. All my life I have been 100% Chevrolet but the most expensive truck I’ve owned has turned out to drive the worst.

GM has an opportunity to step up and show customers they truly back their products, if they fail to resolve I believe their future 2019 Silverado will be the beginning of the end of them leading truck sales.

Silverado 1500 LTZ

  • Automatic transmission

This truck has never shifted from 1st to 2nd or even to 3rd sometimes without an audible and noticeable CLUNK, as if we hit something. It feels as if there is a problem in the rear U joint, but I know nothing about cars. Dealership has been unable to fix it and basically tells me there is nothing wrong and they can't help. It drives me crazy.
