At 15,000 miles or around 2003 my 02 Silverado started knocking after starting the engine. I alway used high quality Valvoline Durablend 5W30 oil and maintain the engine meticulously. I complained to Wickstrom Chevy in Roselle, IL when I experienced the issue in 2003 and even called GM shortly afterwards. GM said the piston slap and oil consumption was acceptable but this is BS. My 99 Nissan Sentra 1.6L with 175K and driven to junkyard didn't even consume a drop of oil when I changed it at 3750 mile interval with conventional 5W30. GM completely messed up on their piston design and is trying to cover up their incompetency! I worked for Motorola Automotive, later Continental AG, on multiple ECU design teams and the Japanese OEMs are light years ahead of GM. GM should pay for the R&R of the engine to correct this issue!
Update from May 19, 2022: Actually, the initial problem was reported to Wickstrom Chevy and GM at 15,000 miles. I have documented proof.
