Bought this truck cause it had low miles from a family member who no longer needed it cause his son left him a 2012 trk. Only 3 days later I noticed the noisy lifters when I started truck from cold! now I am worried about beating up the cam every time I start it. Only 47k in wonderful condition and serviced by dealer since new. I suspect that might be why the problem never got reported.

I have a 2001 Silverado w/ 139000 on it and the pinging sound started under warranty and took it in to a dealer and they said there was nothing wrong.Cold weather made it worse.Progressively it got worse. Now it is noisy in the summer. It sounds like a diesel in the winter upon start up.I took it in recently to my local mechanic but it was warm and made no noise so they had no answer. I might take it back and leave it overnight. This is common on early 2000 models as many people indicate on various websites w/ many explanations as to the cause. No more Gm trucks for me again.

THE WORD PISTON SLAP OR ANYTHING ELSE IS A JOKE. IT IS A DESIGN PROBLEM FROM THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY ARE COVERING IT UP WITH A LIE. THIS CAUSED BY LOOSE TOLERANCES IN THE PISTON/CYLINDER AREA OR CONTAMINATES IN THE COMBUSTION AREA. READ UP ON DEXCOOL LAWSUITS.

MY TRUCK SUFFERED FROM BOTH CAUSING HIGH CONSUMPTION OF OIL AND COOLANT. BOTH FOUND IN THE HEADS CAUSING A CRACKED HEAD OR GASKET FAILURE. THE RESULT! ENGINE REPLACEMENT. NOT CHEAP! BUYER BEWARE! I ALWAYS DREAMED ABOUT OWNING A SILVERADO BUT NOW THE NIGHTMARE HAS AWAKENED ME.

THE KNOCKING IN THE ENGINE THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE HEARING IS THE LIFTERS THE NOISE GOES AWAY WHEN THE OIL GETS TO IT. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS BUY AND INSTALL A HIGH PERFORMANCE OIL PUMP AND THAT SHOULD TAKE CARE OF THE KNOCKING NOISE YOU HERE. OTHER THAN THAT THE TRUCK RUNS REALLY GOOD JUST HAVE TO REPLACE THE EGR VALVE AND THE ABS SENSOR NO BIG DEAL. JUST THOUGHT THAT I WOULD LET YOU ALL KNOW ABOUT THE KNOCKING NOISE.

the knocking noise occurs at start up and goes away after a minute or two. I would like to know if there is somebody that have found the cure for this common Silverado issue.

other than the knock sensors have been replaced as another problem made by Chevrolet.

The dealer a some point will help customers but the bottom line they will do anything to keep Chevrolet to stay in business, and my friends, any help is appreciated.

Silverado LX 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 112,000 miles

my dad has a 01 Chevy Silverado and it started knocking a few months later after he bought it. and its a great running truck. we took it to a buddys house to have it looked at and we came across that it was the crank shaft sensor. well waht happens is that the crank shaft sensor swells up at the head of it we gone threw two sensors to try and fix it but it just keeps swelling up. so we took and got a plastic oring to space it out and the noise went away. maybe the ones with the noise should try that out b4 u decide to get rid of it bc there good trucks.... thanks

There is not much to say, that hasn't been said. I start the engine and it knocks for about a minute or two. There are days that it gets me so mad that i would like to drive it straight into the dealership show-room floor and right up the ass of the salesman that sold me that truck. This is my last GM product. GM better make good on this and have a recall and fix the f*&^%$g problem, otherwise they won't get a penny from me.

I love it when I get someone that asks me, "How you like your truck?". First thing I tell them is, "DON'T BUY ONE!" Hope, you bastards at GM (The Suit wearing bums) all lose your jobs and go to hell. This is why other Americans are buying foreign cars and so will I.

Everybody with the Chevy knock is guessing what I know. They say piston slap this and that. We need a law suit to replace all of these engines. I know THAT THE COLD START KNOCK IS A BAD WRIST PIN. WHEN IT LETS GO YOUR ENGINE WILL BE WILL BE WIPED OUT.

Silverado 1500 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 82,000 miles

Truck has been nothing but problems since bought new. First was had to replace the slip yoke in the driveshaft (under warranty) 8000 miles. Engine knock at start for about 5-10 minutes pending temperature outside. Was told it common engine knock. Sounds like a diesel. Constant brake issues. 3 set of brakes and rotors at 82000 miles. mostly lifetime Napa brakes and rotors. Had to have 4x4 buttons replaced on the dash. approx 40,000 miles out of warranty. Fuel gauge bounces all over the place especially when full. Now check engine light on, stating vacuum leak. Wont buy another Silverado.

Silverado 1500 5.3L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

When my 1500 Silverado, with a 5.3L V8, is started after sitting overnight, there is an engine knock that lasts for about 2 minutes or so at idle. Sounds like a lifter knock. I am told that the lifters in this truck may not be adjustable. This is a very annoying sound it makes and I am afraid it may get worse.
