Brake pedal will go to the floor if a bump/uneven spot in the road is encountered while braking. No mechanical corrections taken yet...should be a recall issue. Pedal travel and braking can only be regained if I let off the pedal and reapply...and there's no more bumps. Has randomly occured throughout ownership depending upon road conditions.

The ABS system is locking up while driving. The vehicle feels pulling back and someone is tugging on the vehicle while driving. The vehicle starts with the problem about 65 mph. Consumer has not tried to correct the problem yet. She is waiting on the dealership to call her back. This problem started about two months ago. This is the only transportation that the consumer has. Consumer's ABS motor will not shut off, causing the battery to run down. The warning light for the ABS illuminated. The service dealer stated the entire ABS motor needed to be replaced. The contact did pull the fuse to the ABS system. Consumer feels that since the ABS is a required option then it should be covered under warranty instead of costing $1,000 to replace. Consumer feels that since it's the braking system that it would be a safety issue and states that Arizona is only worried about emissions.

Replaced both wheel hubs on front of 2001 Silverado 2500 hd (at 39000 miles) due to anti lock brakes not working properly. I spent $900 on this repair because I was going on vacation and pulling a fifth wheel camper. The repair tech said this is not a common problem...I now wonder

2001 Chevrolet Silverado experiencing problems with the anti-lock brake system. The consumer stated the ABS began to engage on dry pavement while slowing between speeds of 5 mph and stopping. At first it was occasional, but then the brakes began to engage consistently on dry pavement. The consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic where corrosion was discovered on the driver side front wheel speed sensor. The mechanic recommended removing, lubricating and replacing both front wheel speed sensors. The mechanic stated it was a common problem with the pickup's due to the design of the part and the conditions which the vehicle are driven; snow and highway salt.

May 122005

Silverado 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 44,000 miles
While pulling in to park, the ABS activated and consumer crashed into the side of a building. The brake pedal eventually went to the floor but was making a clicking noise as if it were being activated. The road conditions were dry pavement with no debris or moisture. At slow speeds the brake pressure ABS would come on lately. Consumer states that GM will pay for all the damages and believes instead of the GM dealer cleaning the sensors they should have replaced them with new ones and not some that will rust.

Silverado 4WD 8-cyl

For no reason and at low speeds the anti lock brakes activate. Happens most of the time when brake is applied. Dealer says the sensors are dirty, had the sensors cleaned, but problem is still there. Had one sensor replaced at advice of GM dealer, and the problem is still there (left front). Has talked to manufacturer, and is not satisfied with what they are doing. Pulled fuse to deactivate anti-lock brakes.

problem #70

May 042005

Silverado 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 44,000 miles
When the brakes were applied the vehicle's ABS activated at about 5 mph, no matter the weather condition. When this occurred it was difficult to stop the truck because of the pulsation caused by the ABS. Now this problem happens everything the brakes are applied. This incident occurs because dirt or rust obscures the wheel sensors located behind each brake rotor.

problem #68

May 042005

Silverado 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 13,000 miles
Anti lock brake system corroded, and vehicle might not pass inspection. Took vehicle to inspection station, who said this was the problem. Had several incidents. Sometimes vehicle didn't stop. Brakes seemed to be defective. Consumer added that the anti-lock braking system activates while driving without depressing the brake pedal, thus causing heat build-up and increasing stopping distance. Also increases anxiety as to whether or not the vehicle will stop in time.

problem #67

Apr 212005

Silverado 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,400 miles
Vehicle has 48,400 miles, on it, and had to have the rotors and brakes changed. Certified mechanics did the work. Consumer was upset about the fact that the brakes did not last long. When the rotors were taken off they were just pieces of metal missing, and they all were rusty, especially on the inside where the anti lock brakes operated. Consumer said that the front rotor was too thin to be turned, the brake pad was not worn out and it was poor metal from the manufacturer. Consumer talked to several other Silverado vehicle owners and they either had the same problem or didn't know about the situation until after they got there vehicle checked out, and was informed of the same problem. Consumer said that the dealership was aware of similar incidents such as this one because of other Silverado owners.

problem #65

Feb 012005

Silverado 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 39,000 miles
2001 Silverado ABS brakes kept applying at slow speeds while rolling to a stop. Applying after hitting a bump prior to stop. While getting gas one day I went to change lanes in the gas pump area, while barely moving the ABS pump started running and it took both feet and both hands holding onto the steering wheel to push down the brake pedal.the truck is 6000 mi. Out of warantee so I disconected the ABS fuse (mainly because I never had any faith in the ABS system anyway)but this was the last straw.I am disapointed that a truck with such low milage would have such a poor braking system.I relate this to you as it sounds like the problem described on the news and thought it might be important.
