Today (11/21/00) was the third time I've experienced brake failure due to problems with the anti lock braking system in my 1996 Chevrolet S10 pickup. During certain, specific situations, the ABS will "decide" not to apply the brakes, allowing the vehicle to continue to roll forwards. The road conditions under which this occurs are as follows: 1) slow speed; generally less than 10 mph. 2) wet, slick pavement that abruptly changes to dry pavement and then back to wet pavement. In these situations, the ABS can be heard and felt cycling but no stopping power is available. The only way to stop the vehicle in this situation in a "reasonable" distance is to apply the parking brake and "lock up" the rear wheels. The first two occurrences, which did not result in an accident, took place approximately 1 1/2 years ago while the vehicle was under warranty. The S10 was taken to a Chevrolet dealer (groth brothers, livermore, ca 94550) who checked the ABS system and said there was no problem. The third occurrence happened on 11/21/00 and resulted in me rear-ending a vehicle stopped at a stop light. --I approached the red light at which a vehicle was stopped. I was traveling less than 10 mph and the road was wet but I had plenty of room to stop (or so I thought); at least 50 feet! as I applied the brakes for a leisurely stop (didn't pump them, just an even, steady firm pressure), I could feel the ABS system begin to cycle. At this point, no stopping power was available at all and I rolled into the car ahead of me at the red light. Because of the slow speed, no damage was incurred. Before you chock this up to operator error or a driver (me) who does not understand ABS, consider this; I have had much practical use and experience with ABS systems. When depressing brakes vehicle goes into an extended stopping distance on wet roads. Had recall repairs done on vehicle, but same problem returned. The problem occurs on loose gravel road too.
After driving for a while would start to apply brakes for a normal stop. ABS pump would kick in & would not have any brakes. Whenever brake pedal wad released, ABS light came on. Then, tapped brakes and vehicle would stop. Problem was intermittent. Have not taken to dealer as of yet.
Slowed by normal braking to 15 mph, additional braking required more foot pressure which resulted in almost total loss of braking. Dry road conditions. Occurs 2 to 3 times a year. Software fix installed per recall.

Consumer was traveling about 65mph on highway, and without prior warning transmission just locked up. Also, rear wheels locked up. Vehicle was towed to dealer. No transmission fluid was leaking.
ABS will release; when brakes are applied and turning a corner, they start to apply then there are no brakes at all. Dealer says there is nothing wrong with the ABS brakes.
Prior to recall notification vehicle experienced continued failures of the ABS system, one incident resulting in vehicle collision due to loss of brake control. (99V-193)
While driving and applying brakes ABS engaged and the rear came around about 3 inchers to the right.this only happened when payment was wet or raining. This caused consumer to lose control.
While crossing an intersection applied the brakes on a bumpy road and brake pedal went to the floor. Consumer hit another vehicle, and airbag didn't deploy. Called the dealer, and they said that this was normal.
While traveling 35mph and as a result of a sudden stop vehicle continued to travel with pedal to floorboard, causing consumer to hit another vehicle. Dealer has been notified.
Consumer was driving on the highway going 50mph, another vechicle made a U turn in the middle of the street, consumer thought that vehicle was going to turn in the opposite of his vehicle, an dhe veered over to the shoulder on wet pavement to slow down. Then, veered onto the dry pavement, and the anti-lock system didn't kick in. Also the airbag didn't deploy.
When ever the brakes are applied suddenly, the ABS brakes had no braking ability. Brake pedal goes to halfway to floor. This increase the stopping distance. The problem only occurs on dry roads. Contacted GM & informed no recalls. Vehicle is not at dealership.
While following another pickup truck about 4-car lengths behind, truck in front swerved right, and consumer hit brakes. But ABS brakes did not come on. Consumer rear ended vehicle in front on drivers side. Consumer told dealer about a recall on ABS brakes. Dealer had knowledge of it. Recall 99V193000.
Whenever vehicle runs over a manhole cover in a down incline it causes brake failure, vehicle would continue on into the intersection before stopping. This condition could lead to a vehicle collision if not corrected.
When brakes are applied, the anti-brake stystem will grab / lock-up causing failure. The ABS warning light is coming on. Dealer says the vehicle is alright without ABS.
ABS brakes reeceived letter from GMC about this problem.after going to the dealer they ran my VIN number and said this does not apply to this truck even thou I have this problem.
ABS/brakes have failed many times. Rear brakes lock up severely causing loss of control. This has occurred numerous times and is extremely dangerous. Have seen many similar failures at your web site. Please do something.
