A D V E R T I S E M E N T S
While my foot was firmly on the brake, sitting at a red light, my 2013 Chevy Malibu car suddenly TOOK OFF and hit the car in front of me! I was terrified. My car smashed into a young couple's SUV and they had a baby in the backseat. They didn't believe me when I told them it wasn't my fault and they looked at me like I was a piece of crap. I haven't had an accident in over 25 years (and when I did back then, someone hit ME) so I consider myself an extremely safe driver, and this was completely awful for me! The officer didn't believe me either. Who would, right? It's the car's fault? Ridiculous!
So after she took down all the information and the other people left (no injuries but a small dent to their bumper, which was microscopic but they still had it fixed, and charged my insurance, of course), the officer waited behind me until I left the scene. Except my car wouldn't start. However, there was a plethora of error codes that were flashing across the screen, as well as the front and back lights flashing all over the place, no rhyme or reason, as well as all inside dashboard lights and decorative panel lights.
I got out of the car and motioned to the officer to come over. When she saw that, she literally said, "Holy crap, now I believe you!" (Except she refused to put this on the accident report). She ordered me to move the car and I told her I had to call AAA to get it towed. She complained a lot because it took so long, but ultimately AAA arrived and the tow truck driver could not believe what was happening. He said the car looked like it was possessed. The key was also stuck in the ignition and wouldn't come out. He managed to get it on his flatbed, but it was still flashing (while it was off, mind you). He drove it to my mechanic, who waited until Monday morning (it was a Saturday when this happened), to run a diagnostic. A TON of error codes came pouring out, one of which was U0121 Multi-Axis Acceleration Sensor Lost Communication with Electronic Brake Control Module.
Sounds to me like that was the smoking gun that caused the accident A friend suggested I call General Motors because the Chevy dealer I bought it from said, "Gee, I never heard of that before....." So I emailed GM and they conducted an investigation, complete with air bag deployment analysis (the air bag did not deploy). In the middle of this, my GM case investigator got laid off due to the GM mass layoffs at the end of last year, and they appointed a new case investigator. This new investigator could not care less and said the air bag report came back as nothing was wrong with the car. I asked her about all the error codes, especially the one mentioned above, and she said it didn't mean anything. I contacted Mary Barra again, CEO of GM, and her assistant said they couldn't do anything for me. You see, I was terrified of the car at this point and would not get into it ever again.
I had only one year of payments left, I was planning to keep it until this happened. Now, I had to pay a $500 deductible to the insurance company, paid $200 for a rental car to get me back and forth from work for 2 weeks, as well as put $2,000 down on a new car (a Mitsubishi this time, which I LOVE). So I put in a claim to GM for this $2,700 and GM basically told me to go to hell, they wouldn't help me. Every time I contacted their office, her incapable assistants told me all different sorts of reasons why they wouldn't reimburse me, reasons that made no sense and were not part of what I was asking for. At one point, one of them told me that the claim department was separate from them and they did not have information. So if they had no information, where were they getting these bogus reasons from, for denying me? It was like they just didn't give a crap, didn't listen to me at all.
I cannot believe my awful experience and will never, ever buy a Chevy again! Similar electrical problems are occurring all over the United States, just with the 2013 Malibu's alone! I wish someone would be willing to start a class action lawsuit. General Motors/Chevrolet should not be able to get away with this! And now they're working on "self-driving" cars?? GOD HELP US ALL!!!
