I bought a 2011 Chevy Malibu in good shape except that the transmission won't go into reverse. I had it diagnosed by AAA on South Blvd in Charlotte, NC yesterday and they said it would cost me over $4,000 to have it replaced. (They only use dealer parts.) The powertrain warranty goes up to 100K miles. After googling the problem it became obvious that this is a known defect to Chevrolet. In one case I saw Chevrolet paid 60% of the cost to another person whose transmission also died around the 100K warranty point. Many other transmissions seem to have died before the 100K mark. This is totally unacceptable! I come from a family that only had Impalas from 1968 until the 80's and I know that Chevys used to last!
The cost of the repair is outrageous. Many owners just decided to not fix it. I'm sure that they are no longer Chevy owners. I may be next on that list if Chevrolet doesn't step up and offer some relief. I need this car in order to work. I am the 3rd owner. The 1st drove it 40K+ miles. The 2nd drove it 60K+ miles until it broke at 105,669K. She was also told $2,500 (by a friend) to $4K to fix it and decided to buy another car. It's sad because you can't even hear the engine when it is running.
I'm looking to get some information on how to get Chevrolet to honor the powertrain warranty because all of these cars should not be breaking down exactly when the warranty expires. Cars are too expensive nowadays. This repair cost is more than half the value of the car. HELP!!!
