Chevy Malibu Owners Problems And Solutions - I am having same issue, this may help other people, I will try it on my car tomorrow, but it is dangerous and I do not know why there is not a recall on it.
The brake lights come on at random. This is a dangerous condition it is also related to the problem with the cruise control disengaging at random and refusing to work.
A very dangerous problem here. The brake lights will come on when you're not pressing the brake pedal. If it is dark outside, you can see this happening and you will also notice that the lights turn off when you hit the gas. Once you let off the gas, though, the brake lights come on again. It seems it is a short somewhere in the system, which is just typical for this piece of crap car. The danger with this is that the car following you may not be able to tell what you are doing and, since it is a short, the lights may not come back on when you hit the brakes, causing an accident. Yet another example of why GM products are not selling. No wonder why Honda sells so well.
Update from Feb 3, 2012: The problem was related to the issue I was having with the shifter (which has also been documented on this site). The brake pedal switch was not functioning properly and was telling the brake lights to go on and off at the wrong times. That switch has been replaced and I haven't had a problem since.
My Malibu brake lights come on and go off by themselves and the dealer cant seem to fix the problem i am at my wits end with the problem anyone have this problem or know a solution please let me know.
