This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Single mom of two, I am paying for a car that is supposed to be dependable and safe. I do not want to be a statistic because of someone who wants to save a buck! I chose the Malibu for the safety rating and was beside myself when I was told of the reoccurring, not repairable rotor problem. Then also after 36,000 miles I will get to pay for all rotor repairs since it will no longer be covered under the mf warranty. I used to have great respect for Chevy. I realize how very unimportant I and my children are to them now. I can not afford to repurchase a new car and I pray that this problem will be resolved soon.
Whenever stopping vehicle, can feel the brake pedal pulsating. Needed to push harder on pedal to get vehicle to stop. The ABS light would flash on/off. Took vehicle to dealer & mechanic changed the brake pads. The rotors were rotated at least twice & then scrapped.
Defective / faulty brake system: Dealer has replaced four sets of brake pads;.turned three rotors, and replaced one rotor. Also, and sanded & deglazed rear brakes. Can NHTSA do something about this condition.
When the ABS brakes are applied, there would be some wobbling. Has appened at least 6 times. The mechanic felt the ABS sensors were failing. Rotors are substandard & are going out. There would be shimming. Not heavy enough for vehicle. Was corrected.
Whenever the brakes are applied, vehicle would shake. Took to dealer & was informed the brake pads & rotors were worn out. The rotors were also pitted. Dealer informed owner would have to pay first before repairs to brake damage is done.work completed at location vehicle was purchased under "one time warranty repair". pads worn out at 17,504, rotors worn out at 22,854. * mjs
When the brakes are applied while traveling above 50 mph, vehicle will shake and pulsate. Also, steering wheel has to be braced to keep control. This is due to bad rotors. GMC, and the dealer ship has been contacted.
Cruise control was set between 60-70 mph, went to apply brakes, but they did not disengage the cruise, driver had to repeatedly apply brakes before the finally engaged, resulting in serious safety hazard.defect has occurred 3 times, and dealer has replaced brake sensor.
ABS not working. Break problems replaced at 19,000 miles and I am having problems again. Noise coming out of the front right tire. Rear view mirror fell off.( dot number: Tire size: 15 )
When the brakes are applied the vehicle vibrates, resulting in loss of vehicle control. The dealer has repaired the vehicle three times. Manufacturer has been notified.
Pulsating brakes in front. Requested they be "replace" denied by dealer....they were fixed..."rotors were resurfaced" I feel this should not have happened that the rotors are defective" please advise... 2 flats in rear..one tire replaced the other plugged. Again this is a new car" advise. Thanks.( dot number: )
We bought a 98 Malibu in Feb 99 w/20K miles. Soon after we noticed a slight vibration in braking.I had it checked and rotors are warped. I was told this was common in Malibu and that the problem has existed since they came out in 97.this was from the serv. Dept mgr at adams Chevrolet in raytown, mo he says he sees several Malibu every week for the same problem, and that it wasn't covered by warranty or manuf. Recall. Only if the problem begins withing 12K miles. It was as if I was just supposed to accept this..even though we paid $14,000 for this car. GM brags that the car can go up to 100K miles without a tuneup, but they forget to tell you you'll have to have the rotors turned every year.
I bought my Chevrolet Malibu used and have had it about 2 months. Days after the 36,000 mile warranty runs out I have major brake problems. Replaced front brakes, pads, right rotor and right caliper. Every mechanic I've seen is amazed that a car a year old needs a new caliper. Called the dealer and they told me they couldn't do anything about it. Also had problem with front end rattling noise like the front end is loose or something; dealer did put new control arms on, but noise still persists.
