This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
95 Luminas and monte carlos as well as other GM w-body vehicles have a problem with the turn signal switch going bad and causing the brake lights not to work.
Dear NHTSA, I drive a 1995 Chevrolet Lumina. Recently I had the turn signal switch replaced. ($150) the switch just wore out from old age. I have looked on many websites and this is a common failure in these cars with many people complaining of the same failure. The real problem is when the switch wears out and fails; the Lumina's brake lights do not function. The brake light circuit runs through this faulty turn signal switch and prevents the brake lights from coming on when the brakes are applied. This is a significant hazard, as cars behind you don't know that you have applied your brakes and may not reduce speed in time to prevent a collision. I am appalled that the brake light circuit goes through this failure-prone faulty switch. I wanted NHTSA to be aware of this situation and hopefully warn unsuspecting motorists. Thank you
Brake lights will intermittently work. Also, directional switch will work. Contacted dealer, and dealer replaced relay that connected turn signal switch and brake light switch.
While driving turn signal will not work at a time. Brakes light will come on, and windshield wiper swill stop working. Technician said problem was with the multi- function switch on the steering column.
Intermittent failure of signal, windshield wipers/ turn signal, and brake lights. Owner believes the cause to be the multi-function switch. Dealer was not notified at this time.
While driving windshield wipers stopped working in the middle of a storm. Windshield wipers will not work at all unless the left turn signal is on.please provide any futher information.
