No warning signs leading up to the tranny failure. Always shifted fine.
Then on a 300 mile trip home from college, as I was getting on the freeway, there was a loud clang from the underside of the car. I had a feeling it was the transmission, but it was still moving fine in fourth gear, so I kept going, rather than being stranded on the freeway.
I would have made it all the way home, except I was running on fumes 20 miles out, so I stopped for gas. On the off ramp, I completely lost the tranny. No forward or reverse.
After grinding through the gears a few times, I was able to get first gear to engage long enough to putter to a parking lot, where it sat until it could be towed.
Put in a rebuilt transmission at an out-of-pocket cost of $1,800
