Power steering went out completely. This was something that had to be taken to a dealer. Found that the rack was binding and noise coming from it. They needed to replace the rack. However, the rack is electric and does require programming to work properly. The cost was $5400! I about lost it when they told me. I told them that I could get a different car for that price and told them to forget it. Car complaints wouldn't let me put the cost of repairs in the box because they thought it was too high. I agree with them.

Raining yesterday and the roads were slick, so I slowed down fixing to go down a hill and saw that there was an accident on the side of the road. As I was slowing down, the dash lights light up with anti-lock break system, traction control lights lit up and then power steering failure error and then the stabilitrack message came on in the center of the information screen. I went to slow down further and the back end of the car comes around and I lose control of the car. After spinning around 3 times, I hit another vehicle that was trying to avoid me. Lucky my wife and kid was not in the car - this could have wiped out my whole family. This was the only time that this issue had happened. Yes, the car had 156 k miles, but I never heard of this problem until today.

My wife was driving home with our children in the car and the power steering went out. She was on the highway and the steering got really stiff. She slowed and exited and we had the vehicle taken in to our local dealership for service. The vehicle information center had an error message displayed "Stabil-Trak error".

The dealership called me and told me the right rear wheel bearing was bad and needed replaced. I asked them about the error message and asked why the right rear wheel bearing going bad would be a reason for shutting down the power steering? They had no answer just that was the problem with the vehicle. I had had it in only two months previous for new front struts, which at 50,000 miles living in the south was crazy that struts would be out already. Anyway, I obviously didn't believe them that a wheel bearing would be the reason the power steering wasn't working so, I told them not to fix it since it was well over $1,300 to repair and since I had just had the struts replaced that this car was turning into a money pit real fast.

I logged onto my Chevrolet my link account and detailed the entire diagnosis. No answer of course ever. I have done some mechanic work over the years so, I decided to replace the right rear wheel bearing myself and call their bluff. The replacement part cost $35 on Rock Auto.com. Took a couple of hours on a Saturday and replaced it. Started it up, still had the Stabil-trak error message and the power steering wasn't working. Drove about 1/4 mile and the message cleared and the power steering started working.

Now I was really unhappy. WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU PROGRAM A VEHICLE TO SHUT OFF THE POWER STEERING WHEN A WHEEL BEARING IS GOING BAD!!!! GREAT IDEA!!! LET'S CAUSE A CRASH FOR A BEARING! You have this information center and the ability to send error messages to the driver. WHY NOT SEND A MESSAGE THAT SAYS, "Stabil-trak" "see authorized service center" AND LEAVE IT AT THAT!!!!!!! Logged several more complaints with Chevrolet online and never did get a response, guess they really want to stay away from this problem because they don't want to acknowledge the potentially fatal error.

Ive had my car in 3 times since this problem started. The first two times, they ran diagnostics and charged me, but couldn't "replicate" my problem. In September, while getting an oil change, they said I has a "steering pan leak." I didn't know there was a steering pan in my car.... $1500, but my extended warranty covered all but $100.

Things were working fine until December, when a series of messages started popping up on my instrument panel.

I brought the car in right away, but they couldn't find anything wrong. Since that time, I've lost power steering for short intervals- 3 times. The message "service stablelink," has expanded to "service track stabilizer" and "service stable track." This week, add "service traction control" and "service brake assist." I have it in now and they're checking it out. We've has a spell of cold weather (Minnesota) and it seems like it's worse when it's cold. Once the car is warmed up, I don't seem to have a problem. When I do have the problem, it seems like it's when I'm making a turn......
